Lou runs a child's fun-fair, and fears that the authorities will take away his adopted children while Bud is a chronic gambler tangled up with loan sharks. Recent DVD reviews include: Odd Man Out: Criterion Collection - this movie kicked off director Carol Reed's run of great post-war films and its indelible style, sharp vignettes, and masterful lead performance makes for an immensely rewarding film.; X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes - among the smartest and most thoughtful genre films of its era, this Blu-ray release of the Roger Corman film has a gorgeous presentation and substantial extras; and Hoop Dreams - this excellent film helped bring a newfound vitality to documentaries as it follows two young boys in Chicago as they attempt to find success in high school basketball which will hopefully find them securing a college scholarship. TV on DVD: Inside Amy Schumer, Case Histories, and Hill Street Blues
Inside Amy Schumer: Seasons One & Two TV on DVD remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Inside Amy Schumer: Seasons One & Two - a tremendously funny show that's loaded with big laughs and refreshingly light on potholes; Case Histories: Complete Collection - a good private eye series based on novels and characters created by Kate Atkinson, it tells the story of an ex-soldier/ex-cop turned private investigator struggling with family problems and haunted by memories of the death of a young woman; and Hill Street Blues: Season 4 - season four found the show cresting at the highest possible peak of an already large wave, and it was breathtaking to enjoy the ride. DVD Savant: The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Hoop Dreams, and The Way Things Go
The Friends of Eddie Coyle This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Friends of Eddie Coyle - Robert Mitchum is superb as an aging Boston hood who turns squealer in hopes of avoiding a prison term. Unfortunately, the ruthless web of deceit and informing in the Beantown underworld puts him at a lethal disadvantage; Hoop Dreams - Three filmmakers followed two disadvantaged Chicago neighborhood boys for five years, as they pursued their goal of becoming big-time NBA basketball players; and The Way Things Go - A pair of Swiss artists / mechanics / chemical engineers fashion an astonishingly varied and intricate Rube Goldberg machine that takes a full thirty minutes to play out. This Week's Notable Releases: The Babadook, Sullivan's Travels, and Joe 90
The Babadook Some great discs are being released this week. Check out these new movies: The Babadook [review] - one of 2014's best horror films featuring an insidiously terrifying idea by writer / director Jennifer Kent and a spectacular lead performance in Essie Davis... it's a terrifying and unique movie; Sullivan's Travels [review] - a sharply written and executed comedy classic from writer/director Preston Sturges, the film is a heartfelt masterpiece about our ability to laugh and make others laugh; and Joe 90: The Complete Series [review] - another fun Gerry Anderson Supermarionation show, it's easy to see why '60s kids were enthralled by the slicked-up adventures of a boy spy who vanquished enemies with a host of cool props and vehicles. Recent Reviews: Empire Records, The Wicked Lady, and Together Brothers

Recent DVD reviews include: Empire Records - There's nothing but good intentions coursing through this film about a cluster of eccentric, music-loving employees who bond between the walls of a record store; The Wicked Lady - a pleasant surprise, it's campy fun, boasting an excellent cast of seasoned British players with Faye Dunaway's overwrought centerpiece entertainingly villainous; and Together Brothers - a watchable slice of mid-1970s drama - it feels like a blaxploitation film on the surface but this production was definitely made with a broader audience appeal in mind. More highlights from SXSW 2015
The Overnight DVD Talk reviewer Jeff Nelson traveled to Austin, Texas for South by South West 2015 last month. While he was there he saw some great films that are making the film feastival circuit. Check out these movies that all come highly recommended: The Overnight - There are an abundance of laughs to be had in writer/director Patrick Brice's newest film; Mania Days - writer/director Paul Dalio has crafted a masterful drama with an impact unlike anything else.. the best film of the SXSW 2015 Film Festival; and The Invitation - a slow-burn thriller that greatly enjoys manipulating the audience with its various twists and turns... this is atmospheric cinema that knows how to create tension. TV on DVD: WKRP In Cincinnati, Greatest Heroes of the Bible, and Fairy Tail
WKRP In Cincinnati: The Complete First Season Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD recently including: WKRP In Cincinnati: The Complete First Season - a great opportunity to enjoy the consistently excellent start of one of TV's best-written, best-cast sitcoms... and this new Shout Factory release of WKRP's first season successfully preserves many of the great musical jokes that were lost in the previous Fox release; Greatest Heroes of the Bible: Volume One - this Schick Sunn Classic Productions from the late 70's is just what you'd expect from the company... family friendly fare on a very low budget; and Fairy Tail: Part 15 - the series remains entertaining, action-packed, and engaging throughout this entire set. DVD Talk's Sixth Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge
Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April is here and that means it's time for DVDTalk's Sixth Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge! In this event, fans of trash cinema, the dreck and dross of films, will try to watch 100 B-movies in a single month and (optionally) complete the movie checklist that has such diverse items as watching a 60s Beach Movie, a Mexican wrestling film, a "bad sequel to a well regarded film" and a nunsploitation flick (and much more!). Can you spend the evening chatting about the relative merits of various Bruce Lee imposters or are you someone who realizes that Russ Meyer films are an art form unto themselves? Then this is the event for you! If you think you're up to the test, or even if you just want to watch, check out the official Challenge thread. It'll be loads of fun, and there are prizes too! The fun all starts now and it's never too late to join in the fun!

Journey to the Center of the Earth This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Journey to the Center of the Earth - James Mason and Pat Boone explore the interior of the earth and find monsters, mushrooms, massive oceans and the lost city of Atlantis; Miami Blues - a young and trim Alec Baldwin shines as Junior Frenger, a weird sociopath-thief who experiences an identity crisis -- he steals a detective's badge and gun and has so much success committing crimes with them that he forgets who he; and The Babadook - It's grim, it's depressing, it seems to gather up all the miseries a single mother could possibly suffer -- and it's a great horror movie, always intelligent, never going for cheap shocks.
