The Aisle View: Cold Mountain, Big Fish and Paycheck
One winner and three losers arrive in theaters Christmas Day and The Aisle View has a look at all of them: Aisle view critic Megan Denny applauds Tim Burton's latest outing, Peter Pan adaption spares the audience from torturous musical numbers, but ultimately is no better than any of the nine other film versions of the classic children's tale. Paycheck, the new John Woo film about a man who must piece together the last three years of his life and save the world using only some paper clips and a bus ticket is a great idea for a film, but is unwatchable due to the lackluster performance of Ben Affleck. Finally, the long-awaited adaptation of the best-selling novel Cold Mountain turns out to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year due to a lack of chemistry between the main characters. This Week's Notable DVDs (12/23-12/30)
A much more anemic week for notable DVDs as we begin to round out the year with a much heavier focus on titles that people are more likely to rent than buy: Jeepers Creepers 2 [Giveaway] - perhaps not as solid as the first chapter in this horror series, but a good rental if you're in the mood for some light horror, L'Auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) [Review] - A likable, sweet film that's entertaining and involving but with far to little of screen gem Audrey Tautou, Alex & Emma [Review - Luke Wilson and Kate Hudson star in a Rob Reiner film that is certainly no 'When Harry Met Sally', Anything Else [Review] Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci star in a tepid Woody Allen film that just can't deliver, The Medallion [Review] - another in a long line of recent Jackie Chan movies that are only merit a rental rating. Read our Complete List of Upcoming DVDs.

DVD Savant: The Rolling Stones Four Flicks

Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Just Announced DVDs
Some interesting DVDs announced this week including: the Irish import Ordinary Decent Criminal on 1/13 starring Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino and Colin Farrell in a likeable caper, Mike Figgis' semi-suspenseful Cold Creek Manor on 3/2 [Review] with Sharon Stone and Dennis Quaid, the over-the-top Matrixesque Japanese action flick The Returner on 2/10 [Trailer], Just One Of The Guys on 2/24 - the 80's comedy which has the distinction of being on the CineSchlock-O-Rama Most Wanted List and finally in addition to Schindler's List on 3/9 universal has announced the release for the five-part Steven Spielberg / Shoah Visual History Foundation TV Documentary Broken Silence on 3/9 which explores the horrific experience of the Holocaust as told by its Survivors. Hidden Gems - Films Not To Overlook
With so many major DVD releases out this season, it's extremely easy to overlook great 'Hidden Gems' on DVD, so here are several we suggest you seek out: So Close - a Chinese martial arts film, kind of an Asian "Charlie's Angels," but more fun and innovative, Off The Charts -a documentary about odd people who write lyrics and have them produced as songs, MI-5: Volume 1 - this BBC series is one of the best surprises of the year, Gerry - Gus Van Sant's prelude to Elephant is as inventive as it is beautiful, Wild Zero - the best Japanese rock-and-roll zombie splatter-comedy fat-packed with action on the market today, Melvin Goes to Dinner the directorial debut of Mr Show's Bob Odenkirk is very entertaining and very highly recommended, Wire in the Blood: Mermaids Singing- a psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your set.
