10.Titan AE
American animation reached an incredible pinnacle in
the release of this perfect blend of traditional
animation and CGI. The Story Line while certainly not
new, was given new life with both visually arresting
imagery and audio tracks that are clearly reference
material for any Home Theater demo!
9. Jaws 25th Anniversary Collector's edition
Timeless classic given great digital treatment. While
the extras were not the watershed expected, the
transfer of the film and it.s re-mastered Dolby
Digital and DTS audio tracks more than made up for
what was lacking in the extras department.
8. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
SE
Tim Burton is a visionary and his Christmas/Halloween
classic received the most incredible treatment in this
special edition! The extras, transfer and audio
produced for the disc are extraordinary. This kind of
magical moviemaking is a lost art however, Burton
makes it look easy!
7. The Abyss Special Edition
James Cameron's first Oceanic spectacular! Not only
does the disc boast both the theatrical and special
edition version of the film (featuring the tidal wave
sequence), it also carries a second disc stuffed to
the gills with extras! Crystal clear transfer and
dynamic audio round out this extremely well done disc!
6. The Hurricane
Incredible story, incredibly written and acted. The
transfer is impeccable and the extras only go to
compliment an already high caliber effort and
execution!
5. Se7en Platinum series
When it comes to the best in the genre you have other
films and then you have Se7en! The 1st class
treatment that NewLine Cinema has given the film is
definitely to be applauded! The transfer is easily
one of the best to date and the remastered audio is
awesome to say the least. Two disc set and loaded
with extras = a no brainer! No collection should be
without this disc!
4. Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box
Totally digital from every aspect, this collection of
both films and a third disc devoted solely to extras
cannot be beaten. Each film looks incredibly good and
sounds just the same. What more could you ask. Every
fan of the films has been looking for their digital
release and now that it.s come, we are all very
pleased!
3. Princess Mononoke
This is anime at it's very best! Since the film
premiered the anime community has been in an uproar!
Visually and aurally stimulating, it.s an awesome
feast for the senses that never pales regardless of
the number of viewings! Stunning transfer and the
audio is fabulous. Not too mention that the inclusion
of the film.s original Japanese language track in
Dolby Digital 5.1 is due to the stalwart actions of
Geoffrey Kleinman and the hardcore anime fans of
DVDTalk! Awesome film!
2. Terminator 2 Judgment Day The Ultimate
Edition
Schwarzenegger defined action for the 80.s and the
90.s! Nothing so defined the genre of action movies
than the perfect blend of sci-fi and action that
Terminator 2 presented in 1991. Some say it.s the
perfect sequel and they may be right! The disc is
loaded with an incredible array of extras and the
transfer and attention to detail in every aspect of
the discs production is nothing short of stellar!
1. Jurassic Park the Collection
All I can say is that I have longed for the release of
these two films since they opened in 1993. Here we
are in the years after the groundbreaking CGI of JP
and TLW and many films have tried to equal the
intensity and awesomeness of these two films. (More
the first than the second) In any event, Jurassic
Park was the benchmark after which all digital
entertainment has been measured. The extras are
plentiful, the visuals/transfer-impeccable and the
audio in either Dolby Digital or DTS is outrageously
dynamic! Easily the jewel of my collection!
Honorable Mention
While I had to choose a top ten, these films I felt
should easily fall into any top 10 lists for 2000!
