Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
synopsis:
In the episode "Space Seed", Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise encountered the deep space vessel, Botany Bay. Upon boarding her, they found her crew in cryogenic freeze. Once "thawed", Khan Noonian Singh, the leader, seeks to overtake the crew of the Enterprise in an attempt to wrestle control from Kirk. His coup defeated Kirk and company deposit this band despots on Ceti Alpha five, a twin planet with an earth like Edenic atmosphere. Fast-forward twenty + years and the USS Reliant is in orbit of what it believes to be Ceti Alpha six. Searching for a test planet upon which to detonate an experimental scientific device. Pavel Checkov is now serving under Captain Terrell of the Reliant and beams down with Terrell to the surface of the planet to determine whether or not they have located the perfect place to perform the test. Much to their surprise, this dustbowl of a planet has some very angry residents who have a cursory affiliation with Starfleet and in particular, James T. Kirk! As the title suggests, Khan's wrath is to be incurred in this film by all comers. As sequels go, this and Aliens are the ones to beat! Star Trek II The wrath of khan is an incredible mix of action, adventure and betrayal. Simply put…You gotta get this movie!!!
Audio:
Not at all what you could call aggressive, the audio does very well for itself but has always been the one feature that was never really up to par! I was hoping and hoping that the audio for this disc would be thunderous but sadly, all I got were a few claps of thunder followed by some rather light rain! The dialogue comes from all three front speakers (center included) and is not very well delineated. The most thrilling sequences for your theater will be the end battle in the Mutara Nebula. The surround effects work very nicely front to back as well as the little (very) use of your sub for the Spartan LFE. In all, I was disappointed in the lack of powerful audio but not so much that it impacted on my viewing experience.
Video:
The video for TWOK is tremendously clean! Most notably is the black level. It's the truest black I have seen in a great many discs! The colors are equally as brilliant. The wine red colors of the uniforms are beautifully presented and don't bleed into anything at all. There are a couple of instances where slight pixelation was evident but, other than that, the image was beautifully anamorphically rendered.
Extras:
With TWOK being the second entry in their film voyages, there was evidently nothing available for the disc in the way of extras, other than a trailer. The trailer is quite cool however; it's not nearly enough for a film of this magnitude. It definitely smacks of "SE" somewhere in the film's future. I really hate that when studios do that. On one hand I'd really like to see an all out SE for all the Star Trek films, I just hate having to pay twice for them!
Overall:
I don't know anyone Star trek fan or not who doesn't love this movie! If you like Sci-Fi, action and adventure, then you'll love this movie! Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan says it all! This movie is major fun from the opening scene to the closing credits! What more do I need to say???? If you have only one movie in your DVD collection, this is the one to have! Highly Recommended
