My New Gun
The introduction of a gun in the first act of a movie always spells trouble. Such is the case with My New Gun a quirky suburban satire.
Directed by Stacy Cochran this independent film from 1992 is mainly a comedy with a little suspense thrown in. Gerald (Stephen Collins) buys Debbie (Diane Lane) a gun and then enter Skippy (James LeGros), an annoying oddball neighbor who has eyes for Debbie and who wants to borrow the gun.
Skippy has problems at home that concerns his spacey mother. Debbie is sympathetic and trusts him to the point that his problems ultimately become their problems. A few twists of plot with an introduction of conflict and sinister elements along with a bit of romance and you have a fairly entertaining movie.
Many of the scenes in the movie introduce some element of mystery. One is never sure where each scene will go or end up and this works to the film's advantage because ultimately there is not a whole lot there.
There is not a whole lot of character development. Gerald is an upper class cad who is overbearing to the point of obnoxiousness, Debbie is the beautiful and smart wife who clearly is underappreciated and Skippy is the odd but sensitive neighbor.
My New Gun is nothing if not an entertaining vehicle for Diane Lane. Her acting is very good and she looks great. When the film came out in 1992 it was the film that sort of helped put her career on a healthy track.
Video:
The DVD is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and looks excellent. The image is sharp and clean, the colors are strong. The film doesn't have the look you expect from an early 1990's independent film.
Audio:
Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. Nothing remarkable but it sounds fine.
Extras:
There are no extras for the film. There are however a bunch of trailers for other films.
Overall:
My New Gun is a good suburban satire with suspense that may have passed you by when it was released. Nothing special but solidly acted and directed. It's worth a look.
