Fantasia Anthology Disc 3: Extra Features

The Disc:
As with the "Toy Story" box set, Disney has also included an impressive third disc for the box set of "Fantasia" that presents a wealth of supplemental features for both the first and 2000 versions of the film. When the viewer first inserts the disc, there is an introduction that explains what we're about to see before we enter a main menu that allows us to go into either "Fantasia" or "Fantasia 2000"'s information.
Going into "Fantasia"'s section, we find that there are several different animated sequences to choose from, and when we do, we find more about what we're going to watch. The first sequence I selected was "Dance Of The Hours". After watching a short introduction by Roy Disney, the additional supplemental features offer additional information about the history of the segment, such as "Tricks Of The Trade", a live reference used; visual and character development art galleries; an unused rough animation segement and more info about the music.
Moving along, the next section offers more information about "The Nutcracker Suite", with again, an introduction leading the area off. Also here is an old featurette about how animation is done as well as information about the music and again, visual and character development art galleries.
The next selection takes us to additional facts about "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", complete with an introduction, alternate concept presentation and visual development gallery. The next section over uncovers more about "The Rite Of Spring", with an introduction, additional excerpt from "Tricks Of Our Trade" about an effects demonstration", as well as visual/character development galleries and music information. Next is "Ave Maria", which offers an introduction, visual development gallery and music information.
Moving along, we find a section covering the segement that, for many, is a definite favorite - "The Socerer's Apprentice". Here, we get an introduction as well as deleted animation with Mickey and a story reel. Again, visual/character development galleries and music information appear here. They do as well in "Pastoral Symphony, which also offers an intro, visual development/character development galleries and music info.
Lastly, there is "Night On Bald Mountain", which offers the same features as the other galleries, but also an excerpt from "The Plausable Impossible", a featurette on pairing visuals and music. Also in "Fantasia", there is one final section for "The Interstitials", which includes visual development and production photos.
But that's not quite all. Under "More Features" we find "the Fantasia that Never Was", which includes deleted scenes such as "Clair De Lune" and "Invitation To The Dance", among others. Also in this section is a short featurette on "the Effects of Fantasia" as well as trailers for the 1940 release and the 1990 release. Additional publicity materials inlcude posters and the Roadshow program.
Investigating the "Fantasia 2000" segments finds many similar areas, but some additional featurettes and features that give more detail. Instead of the "introduction", we get a short "creating" documentary for each piece. "Pines Of Rome" offers visual/character development art galleries, 2 abandoned concepts and a storyboard-to-film comparison. "Pomp and Circumstance" also presents a "creating" segement, along with abandoned concepts and visual/charcter developement galleries. "Piano Concerto #2" includes a "creating" segement, along with storyboards, abandoned concepts, additional art galleries and a feature that has become popular with some of the other recent animated DVDs - a production progression demonstration. This allows the viewer to use the angle button to switch between a look at the story reel, the rough animation, the clean-up and effects animation and the final color for the piece.
"Rhapsody In Blue" offers us a "creating" segment, as well as additional art galleries about "Inspirations From Hirschfeld", design and character design. A featurette about the process of animation is also in this section, as well as a storyboard-to-film comparison.
"Symphony Number 5" offers a "creating" segment, as well as a presentation of early concepts along with a story reel. Visual development gallery also is included. "Carnival Of The Animals" includes a "creating" segment, along with an early story reel, alternate ending and design gallery. The last of the sections focuses on "Firebird Suite", which has a "creating" segment", design and character design galleries as well as story reel, effects animation featurette, original ending as well as another multi-angle production progression demonstration.
"More Features" for "Fantasia 2000" include a very neat interactive orchestra demonstration as well as two trailers and 4 TV ads.
Overall, I enjoyed what this third disc had to offer, even if it wasn't as fun or interactive as the supplemental disc that was offered with the "Toy Story" box set.
