The Movie:

"King of the Hill" is animator/director Mike Judge ("Beavis and Butthead", "Office Space")'s current animated series, which is currently in its ninth season on Fox. The show features the adventures of Texas family the Hills: father Hank (voiced by Judge), wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy), daughter Luanne (Brittany Murphy) and son Bobby (Pamela Segall).

Although I've never been among the show's hardcore following (I've thought it was inconsistent - that, and Peggy Hill can often be one of the most annoying characters on television), but there are times when Judge latches onto a terrific idea and creates inspired situations for the characters. There's several highlights in this Emmy-winning season of the series, including "Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men", where Hank and his friends lead an upset focus group when they find that his favorite lawn mower is about to be replaced by a new model; "Three Coaches and a Bobby", where Hank regrets bringing his old football coach in to coach Bobby's team and "Return to La Grunta", where Hank gets "attacked" by a dolphin.

The DVD

VIDEO: "King of the Hill" is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame, the show's original aspect ratio. The picture quality remained perfectly fine throughout, as episodes looked very similar to broadcast quality. Sharpness and detail were fine, as the details of the animation were clearly visible.

The presentation did show a little bit of shimmering and some slight traces of pixelation, but no edge enhancement was noticed and the elements used seemed to be in fine shape. Colors remained bright and vivid, with solid saturation and no smearing.

SOUND: "King of the Hill" is presented in Dolby 2.0 English and Spanish. Sound quality was fine, as dialogue seemed clear and well-recorded, as did sound effects and music.

EXTRAS: Surprisingly, nothing.

Final Thoughts: Although I'm not "King of the Hill"'s biggest fan, there are some solid episodes on this third season. Fox's DVD set offers fine audio/video quality, but I was surprised there were no supplements included. Recommended for fans of the series.
