Elektra
The story is your basic (and I mean basic) tale of good against evil, with an added twist (that isn't much of a twist). There are a slew of individuals who have supernatural abilities. Our main character and heroine is played by the lovely and talented Jennifer Garner. She plays a Marvel Comic character Elektra, who is a hired assassin. On Elektra's latest job, she has second thoughts about her killing her target. She finds herself struggling with her humanity and decides to protect her target against the bad guys who originally hired her. They're an organization known as "The Hand" that represents evil. The target holds a key weapon that could tip the balance in the war between good and evil. Because of this, the Hand will stop at nothing to make sure that the good guys do not get this weapon. Basically, the rest of the story is about Elektra protecting her target against the bad guys and at the same time, discovering her humanity.
The biggest disappointment that came from this movie was its tempo. For me, I found that as the movie developed, there was very little to draw me to it. The general storyline was pretty weak. This was due to the fact that the story was pretty generic. There just wasn't a whole lot to it. Furthermore, I found that several parts were very transparent. There seemed to be no suspense about what would happen next. The high predictability of the story really hurt this movie, because what's the point of watching if you know what's to come?
I was also put off by several of the characters and their roles, particularly their supernatural abilities. First off, some of these abilities are way out there. Now the story did not offer very much in terms of an explanation for why one character could manipulate the essence of time and space, raise the dead, or another could suck the life out of everything it came in contact with. Instead, we're just forced to accept that some people have supernatural abilities that defy the very world we live in. I'd honestly prefer some fictional explanation as to why, so that I'm not thinking "How the hell did that happen?" throughout the course of the movie. Other recent comic-based releases like Spider-man have done well covering this kind of background. Another general difficult I had related to the characters was with Garner's role as Elektra. Watching Garner in the hit television series Alias is breathtaking. On the other hand her role as Elektra just didn't feel like she was being used to her full potential.
I'll be honest. I did not go into this movie expecting an epic tale. I pretty much expected the story to have a lackluster quality. On the other hand, I did expect that the action sequences would be pretty thrilling... enough to make up for the poor storyline. Unfortunately, the fight scenes did not seem to offer very much action. Most of the time, they were short and a little too flashy.
In the end, Elektra just isn't that good of a movie. With a poorly developed story and a fairly limited amount of action, there just isn't very much to draw you into it.
