The Movie

Based on the novella by Stephen King called The Body, Stand by Me doesn't deal so much with bodies, but more with the idea of young boys growing up and realizing that their time in the sun isn't everlasting and that memories of friends last longer than life itself.

Four boys, Will Wheaton, the late River Phoenix, a pre-Surreal Life Corey Feldman, and a chunky Jerry O'Connell, go on an adventure that will change them for the rest of their lives, not necessarily for what they might find, but for what they discover about themselves. Not a heavily plot driven movie, the film itself relies on us believing in the characters which we do from early on.

The boys take a two day trek along train tracks to search for the body of a boy around their age, who was hit by a train while out on the tracks. Along the way we get some memorable scenes like the leech scene, and the always humorous Lard-Ass story that Wheaton's character, Gordie, tells. Through thick and thin, these boys stick together and support one another throughout creating one of the most memorable coming of age stories of the 20th century.

The DVD

The DVD is an exact replica of the previous special edition released in 2000. Below are my comments:

How's it Look:

I did find the colors to be soft in this release, and some edges to be slightly blurry. Perhaps it's because 5 years after the initial release and we're becoming more picky in our transfers, but compared to watching the edited and highly used version that appears on TV channels yearly, this is a welcome upgrade.

How's it Sound:

Stand by Me is presented in four languages, all in Dolby Mono. The languages supported are:
English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, with subtitles for all in addition to Chinese, Korean and Thai.

Even though the sound is in mono, it does its job and the sounds are all crisp; from the train rumbling to Teddy's laugh, they all sound great.

Extras:

  • Walking the Tracks: The summer of Stand by Me is a roughly 35 minute featurette that interviews director Rob Reiner, Stephen King, Wheaton, Feldman, O'Connell and Keifer Sutherland. It's an enjoyable feature that looks at the making of the movie, and is worth viewing at least once.

  • An isolated music score track is here, showcasing the audio of the movie. I've never been a fan of score only tracks, and this one is no exception.

  • Director's commentary with Rob Reiner, Spinal Tap this isn't, so don't expect a fun or a very informative commentary either. Reiner talks about connections to his childhood throughout the film, but offers little of interest.

  • A video for Ben E. King's Stand by Me is also present.

  • The biggest extra that the Deluxe edition includes is a 32 page collectors book, as well as a CD sampler of songs from the soundtrack. The CD includes eight songs all by their original performers:
Everyday, Let the Good Times Roll, Come Go with Me, Yakity Yak, Lollipop, Great Balls of Fire, Mr. Lee and of course Stand By Me is here as well.

The booklet included offers information on the movie, production photos, and a introduction to many of the characters written when the movie was first released. To keep it fresh, each bio has a 2005 postscript offering information about some recent happenings of each actor. While not groundbreaking, it is a nice little bonus.

    Conclusion:

Should you go out and by this movie? The answer is yes, only if you don't have the previous release as there is nothing here that should make you want to double dip on the exact same DVD with some small bonus items. The movie is a wonderful show to watch time and time again, to see how these boys interact and grow with one another. Even though this is a duplicate of a previous release, if you don't already own Stand By Me, then I recommend this DVD, but for people who already have a version, you can safely skip this.
