Britney Spears - Live and More

The Movie:
In December of 1999, the Britney Spears DVD "Time Out With Britney Spears" came out, and although I wasn't really much of a fan, I thought it might make for an interesting DVD review. To my suprise, the review brought in a flood of visitors and the DVD review was the most heavily read for two straight months, easily beating a legion of reviews I'd done for major mainstream films.
It was the start of my further interest in music DVDs, and I eventually even reviewed "Star Baby Scrapbook", the hilariously awful unauthorized look at Spears' childhood - which even interviewed her dentist. Although I think Spears certainly is cute (and some of her music has grown on me), I've also been pleased with both of her authorized DVD releases. Although "Live and More" and "Time Out" aren't the most impressive DVD music programs I've reviewed, the presentation quality - especially for the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, has obviously had a lot of work put in.
Where "Time Out With Britney Spears" offers the singer's thoughts on fame, "Live and More" captures parts of the "Live In Hawaii" special that aired on Fox, along with footage of the singer on "Saturday Night Live". Again here, the thoughts on fame she offers here don't offer a large amount of insight, but I'm sure fans will be pleased to have the SNL footage and the sound quality of both the concert and the music videos is simply fantastic.

As well as videos for "Lucky", "Ooops...I Did It Again" and "Stronger". The Saturday Night Live skits from when Spears hosted the show are actually quite funny; she has a natural presence and good comedic timing.
The DVD
VIDEO: The video quality for both the widescreen videos and the full-screen concert is excellent, easily far better than broadcast quality. Sharpness and detail are absolutely first rate on the videos. On the concert footage, sharpness is still strong, but not quite as fantastic as on the 3 videos. Flaws are almost completely unnoticable throughout - no pixelation and only brief, light shimmering. Colors are well-saturated and very bold, as well, from the beautiful scenery of "Hawaii" to the vibrant color palette of the videos.
SOUND: "Time Out With Britney Spears" featured a few of the singer's videos in Dolby Digital 5.1. The results were very entertaining, but I could see where some would call the surround use during these videos "gimmicky" - still, the general quality was very good. Quite frankly, the audio for "Live and More" beats the audio quality for "Time Out", especially on the 3 videos - "Stronger", "Lucky" and "Ooops... I Did It Again".
The concert audio and the audio for the music videos are both Dolby Digital 5.1. The concert audio sets up the traditional concert audio presentation, with Spears' voice front and center, with beats and quite active crowd cheering from the surrounds at times. The audio quality is impressive; very smooth, very warm and impressively crisp, with bass that's strong but not overpowering.
The sound for the videos is quite a production, with strong surround use and deep bass. The sound quality for these videos is great, and certainly ranks among the better I've heard music videos sound in Dolby Digital 5.1, especially "Ooops...I Did It Again" and "Stronger". The interview/documentary footage during the performance is what one would expect from the material, simply dialogue-driven. The music, though, sounds excellent.
MENUS:: Main menus contains animation & background music. Scene-selection menu also includes clips for each chapter.
EXTRAS: A decent photo gallery as well as a "jukebox" feature that allows the viewer to pick the order they want to play the songs in. If you look in the "Saturday Night Live" feature that is on the front menu, you can also watch the 3 skits that she did on the episode as well as her "SNL" performances of "Ooops...I Did It Again" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know"(Dolby 2.0) on their own.
Final Thoughts:
Positive: The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio is highly entertaining and offers wonderful quality. Spears' fans will likely be thrilled with the package, which offers a good mix of performance and interview footage, as well as a couple of other extras.
Negative: No complaints, fans should definitely be pleased.
