Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy & Bill Engvall - Live from Las Vegas!

Review by Robert Spuhler | posted June 9, 2005 | E-mail the Author
Stand-up comedy has become balkanized. The most successful comedy tours of the past few years have been broken down by ethnicity (Original Kings of Comedy, Latin Kings of Comedy), gender (Queens of Comedy) or sexual orientation (Gay Comedy Jam).

Another such comedy-by-interest show, the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, brought together four comedians with one trait in common: They are all rednecks. They are all down-home, southern country folks, replete with accents and stories of cars on blocks in the front yard.

Each of the four comics on the Blue Collar tour had careers before the tour became a multimillion-dollar success, the most notable being Jeff Foxworthy and his "You might be a redneck" jokes.

Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy & Bill Engvall - Live from Las Vegas! is a compilation of three stand-up routines from the late 90s, all taped (as implied) in Las Vegas.

It shouldn't be a surprise that much of the material on the disc deals with the lives of the stereotypical southerner. Foxworthy's "You might be a…" jokes, Engvall's "here's your sign" routine and everything about Ron White screams redneck.

Of the three routines, White tends to stray the furthest from mocking southerners and the most towards self-deprecating humor. However, most of this routine appears on The Blue Collar Comedy Tour disc, so anyone who's seen that feature will know what's coming.

Engvall and Foxworthy both stick to comfortable material, although there's less overlap with the Blue Collar disc. There's very little difference between the actual material of Foxworthy and Engvall as compared to someone like, say, Bill Cosby. All three comics tend to work clean bits about funny happenings in their family lives. The only differences are in the reactions.

The DVD

Video:

It appears that Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy & Bill Engvall - Live from Las Vegas! was filmed on a couple of digital cameras. We're talking about video quality on par with home video, here.

Audio:

The 2.0 track sounds like it has been taken directly from the soundboard, but certainly not using the highest quality equipment, and there has clearly been no postproduction. The volume is much higher in the final routine, while the routines of Foxworthy and White vary in levels.

Extras:

The only extras included on the disc are text biographies and a trailer for another Foxworthy DVD release.

Final Thoughts:

The hardcore redneck comedy fans should be sated with Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy & Bill Engvall - Live from Las Vegas! and its mullet-fueled comedy. For everyone else, The Blue Collar Comedy Tour is much more representative of the featured comics.
