No matter how many times you watch him, Bob Hope is always Bob Hope. But this is a good thing! The well intentioned, bumbling misfit, which Bob Hope has played in almost every movie he has ever made, is a timeless, cinematic industry unto itself. And if you like Hope, the double feature DVD of My Favorite Brunette and Road To Bali is a must have!

My Favorite Brunette teams up Hope with Dorothy Lamour in their 5th film together at the time. Hope plays a baby photographer who aspires to be a private detective just like his neighbor in the office next door (a detective played by Alan Ladd). Of course, Hope really doesn't seem to have the stuff it takes but when Carlotta Montay (Lamour) mistakes him for a private detective and wants to hire him to find her missing uncle, Hope jumps at the opportunity to live out his dream. Hope soon finds himself in over his head as the bad guys, played by Lon Chaney Jr. and Peter Lorre try to end his days on earth before he can uncover their plot to…take over the world or get rich or…is it really important? It's a Bob Hope film! My Favorite Brunette is full of the same whimsical spirit and silly laughs you expect from a Hope/Lamour team up. Bing Crosby even manages to make a cameo in this one!

Road to Bali was the last road picture to hit the big screen. Once again Hope and Crosby play two stranded travelers who end up trying to win the hand of princess Lalah (Lamour) in the face of great danger. In this case the danger comes in the form of Ken Arok (Murvyn Vye) who tries to usurp the thrown of the princess. The three escape to island after island dodging a volcano and an overly friendly gorilla all the while Hope and Crosby try desperately to outdo each other's efforts for the hand of Lalah.

Although Hope, Crosby and Lamour still give great performances in this last installment of the Road pictures, if you've seen the other Road pictures, the jokes in Road To Bali are a little thin because we've seen it all before. However, if you're not a Road scholar, this movie should pack plenty of punch for you. The Road To Bali/My Favorite Brunette double feature DVD does not have any special features such as alternative audio tracks or cast biographies—something that would make this set much more appealing—but it's a must have for any Hope, Crosby or Lamour fan.
