Summer of Sam
July of 1977 brought a season of terror ot the residents of New York in the person of David Berkowitz, the self proclaimed Son Of Sam. David, obviously suffering from mental disabilites of the highest order, claimed a 2000 year old spirit AKA the devil inhabited the body of a dog & called out to him to kill. And kill he did. Nine innocent people died as a result of his maniacal killing spree and this film attempts to tell the story of that summer & what it did to those living in and around the area David Berkowitz used as hunting grounds.
Audio
The audio in a word was loud. I found myself turning down the system in an attempt to expereince the nuances of the film. The Dolby digital 5.1 surround was a bit over done and detracted from the overall film. There is little use of the surrounds just blaring audio.
Video
The video presentation was beautiful. Spike Lee uses a lot of different video effects in telling his stories and this film is no different. The widescreen transfer was very well done. I didn't notice any blemishes, artifacting or any other video problems.
Extras
Extras were limited to cast & crew bios & a trailer.
Conclusion
Overall, "Docudramas" of this type attempt to recreate the feel of the period. The terror is quite palpable and the murders are quite startling in their realism. That having been said, I am a fan of Spike Lee & feel him to be one great director however, I did not like this film at all. I thought the story was very well told, but, I didn't gain anything from having this story retold. It's just not a story that I thought needed to be retold.
