Synopsis: Young healthy patients are admitted to Boston Memorial hospital for very minor surgical procedures. However, instead of regaining conciousness afterward, they are found to be in irreversible coma, brain death. Each case, 12 in all, has different variables but all bear the same outcome, death or transferance to the Jefferson Institute for further care. When Dr. Susan Wheeler's (Genevieve Bujold) best friend suffers this fate, Wheeler begins to question the frequency & circumstances surrounding these cases. Her questions are met with all manner of roadblock, stalling, discipline & even death. Is there a conspiracy at Boston Memorial? And if so why are patients being placed in comas on purpose? The answers to these questions and more can be found in this still chilling thriller, Coma.
Audio: The audio portion was fine however, as it was merely a 2 channel stereo production, there was no use of surrounds or sub.
Video: The widescreen transfer of the film shows it's age with flecks & occasional blemishes but, it's generally well done. The disc does carry both the pan & scan as well as the widescreen versions.
Extras: There is one trailer
Overall: This is a 1970's Sci/Fi thriller that hasn't lost it's edge. It's a well done film that will either impress you with it'execution or confirm your worst nightmares about hospitals & doctors in general. I once saw this film on PBS in Philadelphia many years ago & remember really enjoying it. Now years later seeing it again on DVD, it's just as intense & just as gripping. IMHO, it's worth being a part of any Sci/Fi collection. |
