Great Santini, The

List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]

Review by Chuck Arrington | posted January 10, 2000 | E-mail the Author
Synopsis: Robert Duvall brings to life the story of Bull Meechum AKA The Great Santini. A crackerjack fighter pilot, soldier & officer who has it all together on base and in all things military however, he's incapable of making the transition from soldier to father & husband. Every year brings a new home in another part of the world & more instability to a family already on the edge. Just imagine the ordinary problems dysfunctional families suffer & compund them by about a billion.

Audio: The audio is 2 channel stereo. Nothing at all to get excited about.

Video: Pan & Scan transfer that is replete with blemishes, scratches & white-outs. Not a good picture at all. In some places, it looks as though the transfer is that of the VHS copy & not a digital rendering.

Extras: There are none.

Overall: The great santinti is a picture of dysfunction that is all too real for a great many people. While the movie kept my interest, it was pretty predictable from start to finish. As usual, Duvall is in top form and if you are a fan of his then this film's for you. However, if you are looking for more compelling cinema with better transfers & extras, I suggest you look elsewhere.
