Carlos Mencia - No Strings Attached
I wouldn't even call No String Attached a true stand up routine as it doesn't seem to be very rehearsed, it feels more like he got up on stage with an idea of what he might talk about and just started talking. There are few comedians who can execute this type of unrehearsed comedy, Robin Williams is the only other comedian I know that does it and does it well.
As for the amount of laughs from me, that was hit or miss. He concentrates so heavily on getting his point across that he sometimes misses the punch line. But when he does hit the punch line get ready for a good belly laugh. I think if he could refine his act a bit more it would be spot on and a non-stop laugh trip.
As for replay value, like most stand up routines this one just doesn't have replay value for me. Once I know the punch lines I no longer laugh, this doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad DVD. Like I do with most my comedy DVDs I occasionally go back and watch my favorite scene, or like this one, I invite some buddies over to watch it with me.
I wouldn't think Mencia is ready for main stream yet, but I of course would be wrong. Every time I turn around I see his show (Mind of Mencia) advertised. Not only do I hear advertising about Mencia I hear about his antics from people in the real world, this Mencia is a pretty popular guy. As for my recommendation I recommend you rent this DVD strictly because of the replay value, after the initial view it's just not worth another full viewing.
Extras: There's the extended version of No Strings Attached with an extra 20 minutes, which I watched both and it's hard to tell where the 20 minutes fit in. I don't think it matters which version you watch, I doubt you'll see where the 20 minutes fit in either. And Finally there is the "Comedy Central Presents: Carlos Mencia" show which is 20 minutes from his first appearance on Comedy Central, this is more of the same, so if you like No Strings Attached you'll like the Comedy Central Presents. The Extras in this DVD are solid, nothing special, nothing I haven't seen before, but hey if it ain't broke don't fix it. Video: Audio: Final Thoughts:
