South Parl Volume 4

Review by Marc Girdler | posted January 28, 2000 | E-mail the Author
Movie: South Park Volume 4 is of couse the fourth volume in the home video series for Comedy Central's South Park. This volume features four episodes, as well as a bonus "hidden" episode as well. The bonus episode is not hidden at all, but it is not mentioned on the disc's packing. Each episode is introduced by creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. These intros are good for fans, but you have to either sit through them or fast forward through them each time. Anyway, here are the included episodes. First up is "Cartman's Mom Is A Dirty Slut," which involves the cliffhanger episode where we set up the search for just who Cartman's dad is. While everyone in town could be a suspect, a genetic test will reveal once and for all who sired little Cartman. The next installment is "Cartman's Mom Is Still A Dirty Slut" is the episode where we are supposed to find out who the father is, but someone shoots Mephesto before he can spill the beans. For reasons unknown, a blizzard also strikes South Park, burying it in snow and stranding the citizens inside city limits. The third episode is titled "Chicken Lover," and is the classic episode where Cartman assumes the role of policeman when a secret is discovered about Officer Barbrady during a chicken crime spree. Will Cartman's "authoritah" go to his head? The fourth show is "Ike's Wee Wee," which involves the school guidance counselor, who the kids ridicule, ending up taking the drugs and drinking the alcohol he warns the kids against. The bonus episode is titled "Terrance and Phillip," and is in my opinion the funniest episode to date. If you want details, sorry, that's one you just have to watch.

Video: As South Park is a television show, the full frame ratio used is correct. The animation does not really allow for stunning visuals, you just get what basically you see on television. I could not find any major errors with compression, but some minor blocking occurs at some points. The colors are bright and vivid, and shadows are not really a factor. All in all, you get the same thing you see on Comedy Central.

Audio: The stero surround track is more than ample for this title. I did not notice much use of the surrounds, aside from the music, but the smaller effects and dialogue sound crystal clear.

Extras: Aside from the bonus episode on this disc, you get the intros by Parker and Stone, just like the other South Park discs.
