The Movie:
As Halloween approaches, studios like Lionsgate are reaching into their vaults and releasing new and old horror disks. One of the latest to be released is "Night Of The Demons 2"- a goofy, but entertaining mid-90's gore fest.

The story: On the night of the Halloween dance at St. Rita's high school, a group of students (look for a young Christine Taylor) are led by Shirley to a haunted mansion where the demon Angela is said to live. Not long after, Angela appears and wreaks havoc on the trespassers and eventually the high school!

The "Night Of The Demons" series has often been overlooked amongst horror fans. True, it is not a series that ranks among the all time greats, but it's certainly a cut above most modern horror. Part of the fun lies within the fact that the movie is essentially an 80's leftover. We get the cheeseball music, demons, gore, nudity, a haunted house, horny archetypal teen characters (the heroic nerd, the bitch, nerdy girl, the jock, the rebel), all of the elements that horror fans know and love.

Even better than the 80's nostalgia is the highlight of the movie- the one-of-a-kind gore scenes. Without giving away too much, viewers shall be treated to images of lip stick tube tentacle probing, a headless corpse playing basketball with its own head, and killer breasts. Yes, you read that right.

A few aspects of the movie did nag at me. For one, the Sister Gloria character is wildly inconsistent. In the first half of the film, she is strict, mean, and virtually hated by every student. In the second half of the film, she acts like a completely different person as she becomes this calm, collected, courageous bad-ass ready to wage war on demons with rulers and an Uzi holy water gun. In addition, I do think the film tries too hard to mimic "Evil Dead" at times with oddly reminiscent demonic voices, sped up camera shots, and colorful gore galore.

The DVD

Video:
The cleaned up 4X3 full screen (1.33:1) print looks rather pleasant. The lighting is never too dark and the flesh tones are accurate. The only problem I noticed was a few minor scratches here and there.

Sound: The English 2.0 Stereo track sounds clear, but a couple of scenes were out of synch with the dialogue. I'm not sure if the original version contained the out of synch scenes as well. It could simply be bad voice dubbing or an error.

Extras: Not much here aside from English and Spanish subtitles options and trailers for "Bug," "The Condemned," "Bloody Mallory," "Curse Of Alcatraz," "Pirates Of Ghost Island," and last, but not least Uwe Boll's "Alone In The Dark: The Director's Cut" DVD. I'm sure that will be a winner.

Final Thoughts:
"Night Of The Demons 2" is quite simply good-old-fashioned cheesy horror movie fun. Well worth a rent for any horror buff.
