Widespread Panic - Live at Oak Mountain
Sanctuary Records // Unrated
List Price: $29.99 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
This is the third in a four series string of music themed reviews and I find that I'm much more interested in writing about film that I am concerts. Despite the fact, Widespread Panic: Live at Oak Mountain is a DVD not to be missed. Fans and non-fans alike will be pleased with the mix of songs, performances, and music the band plays.
Long though (and rightly so) to be a jam band, Widespread has been experiencing an increase in popularity since the disbanding of the Grateful Dead and Phish. Only remotely linked to the more eclectic style s of the previous bands, this Mississippi plays a fusion of blues and rock that will likely please almost anyone. The six-piece band winds their way through a over 2 hour set and touches upon classic songs and covers such as Pusherman and Wish You Were Here. Beautifully filed and recorded, it's a show that is definitely worth watching several times over.
The DVD
The Video: Filed over a year ago, the video quality is quite good. There is the occasional haze and muddiness, but nothing out of the ordinary considering it's a live film. It's a full frame presentation and no complaints can easily be found.
The Audio: This disc really shines in this department, but still lacks a perfect 10. The sound is recorded beautifully, but the rear channels are filled mainly with processed echo and yells from the crowd. The mix is excellent and the recording levels are perfect. It's a shame that the sound doesn't envelope you the way it should and could.
The Extras: Like many music DVDs, there isn't much in this department. There are 3 individual clips of the band members talking about the formation and progression of the band. It's informative as well as entertaining, but not the focus of the DVD. Overall: Fans of the band will definitely want to pick this up, as should any fan of well produced and performed music on DVD. The great recording and bright levels make for a perfect demo DVD as well.
