I Love New York: Season Two

Review:
"Flavor of Love" is a VH-1 reality show where rapper Flavor Flav tries to find true love out of a series of women who are all literally about to claw one another's eyes out for the chance to be with the former Public Enemy rapper. The series (which is thankfully over after the third season took a turn for the worse) takes everything that's awkward, trashy and ridiculous about "The Bachelor" and amplifies it until it's over-the-top and down the other side. The series is true train wreck TV, and while it got tired by season three, the first two seasons were an impressively trashy guilty pleasure.
Ultra-diva New York, one of the finalists of the first season (who also returned for the second season, once again in the unofficial "villain" role) apparently gained enough popularity for the producers of "Flavor" to award her with her own series, "I Love New York", which sees her continued attempt to find love with a similar format to "Flavor".
As this season opens, the chain-smoking New York (Tiffany Pollard) discusses the events of "Flavor of Love" and how the first season of her new show didn't end up with a successful love match. Shortly after, we are introduced to a ridiculous-looking bunch of 20 guys who look like they were randomly pulled off the street. Similar to the third season of "Flavor of Love", there are 5 picks from internet voters who are in the running. New York's nightmare of a mother also brought in her picks. Of course, there's also a fight between a pair of contestants before the first episode's even over. One wishes that "Chappelle's Show" was still around, as a Chappelle parody of this series (or "Flavor") would have almost unlimited possibilities.
Ah, but there's a co-star to help New York pick. New York's incredibly mean mother, Sister Patterson - who is even more of a diva than her daughter, as shown in the second season of "Flavor" - appears. Sister Patterson appears throughout the series to "help" her daughter pick which guys to keep and which to drop. Sister Patterson even drags in her own spy early in the game to try and keep tabs on things for her. Meanwhile, New York wonders if a midget contestant has special powers.
As with "Flavor of Love", the contestants go through a series of competitions (swim across a nasty looking lake to present a gift to New York, getting a psych test and an interrogation of the contestant's exs or sisters) and kept under the evil eye of Sister Patterson - even as the show eventually moves to Miami and Jamaica. The series is just as much of a mess as "Flavor" (if not more so at times), with the contests humiliating themselves at any possible moment in order to get more screen time. The guys get understandably upset when a contestant from season one comes back and New York looks as if she has feelings for him. A meeting with the parents even results in a yelling match between Sister Patterson and the mother of one of the contestants.
As with "Flavor of Love", "I Love New York" is certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but as with "Flavor", I thought "New York" was so ridiculously trashy and terrible that it was mildly entertaining. It's certainly not great television, but it's very good bad television. Still, this second season of "New York" should take the lead from the failed third season of "Flavor of Love" and quit before it completely wears out its welcome.
This is the "unrated" version - all the curse words are unbleeped.

VIDEO: "I Love New York" is presented by Paramount Home Entertainment in the show's original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect ratio. Image quality appears to be about the same as broadcast, with images looking consistently crisp and clean, if never razor-sharp.
Aside from some minor shimmering and a couple of tiny moments of artifacting, the picture looked crisp and clean. Colors remained bright and vibrant, with no smearing or other issues.
SOUND: "New York" is presented with a first-rate stereo soundtrack, which clearly presents every quotable line and offers up the bass behind the tunes.
EXTRAS: The reunion special and casting special episodes are included, but these seem almost like items that should be included among the episodes of the season anyways rather than regarded as bonus features. We also get a trailer for the season.
Final Thoughts: I thought "New York" was once again so ridiculously trashy and terrible that it was mildly entertaining. It's certainly not great television, but it's great bad television. The DVD set offers fine audio/video quality, but no extras. Recommended for fans.
