Review:

While Mariah Carey has changed things up from the days of looking almost like Amy Grant (see the flannel-heavy "Dreamlover" video from the early '90's), the R & B singer with the legendary five-octave voice went on tour in 2006 to promote her "Adventures of Mimi" album, with "American Idol" judge and long-time collaborator Randy Jackson serving as musical director.

Carey continues to find success despite a few bumps in the road (an embarassing recent performance on "Good Morning America" where she creatively worked in scolding a backup singer into the song), as she has recorded the most number-one singles for a solo artist in the United States (eighteen; the Beatles have 21) and, remarkably, managed to get up and dust herself off after the disaster that was "Glitter". "The Emancipation of Mimi" became 2005's best-selling album in the U.S. and Carey's recent "E=MC²" has been successful since its release.

This tour offered fans the chance to suggest set lists and the eventual final choices provide a good spread of different tunes from across Carey's career. This particular concert was filmed at Anaheim Arena in California and provides a good, high-energy performance, although a few mild concerns do get in the way, starting with the choice to tweak a couple songs, including "Dreamlover", which didn't need the change-up it gets here halfway through the song. There's nothing wrong with including remixed songs, but some of the changes here - at least in my opinion - didn't improve upon the original. There's also the rather amusing rollercoaster video that serves as an introduction to the show. However, these are fairly minor nitpicks in a show that otherwise works well.

As for the show itself, there's definitely costume changes (although they're all variations on a low-cut top thing - Carey talks on the "making of" documentary about nearly having a full-on wardrobe malfunction during one of the dates on this tour) and a few set changes, but I have to say that, given Carey's personality, I almost expected something even more over-the-top.

The DVD

VIDEO: Image Entertainment presents the concert performance in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen (The Blu-Ray presentation is VC-1/1080p). The picture quality is generally very good, as sharpness and detail are mostly above-average, save for some wide shots and audience shots that look somewhat softer. Some minor traces of artifacting are spotted, but the picture otherwise remains crisp and clean. Colors also looked bright and bold, with nice saturation and no smearing. The Blu-Ray presentation looked not a great deal different than the DVD, aside from a noticable upgrade in sharpness and detail.

SOUND: Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio options are offered. The Blu-Ray presentation offers a PCM 5.1 presentation. The Dolby Digital and DTS audio options are just fine, with very good clarity and reasonable use of the surrounds for some reinforcement of the music and a lot of crowd noise. The PCM option offers somewhat improved clarity and range, but the differences aren't much.

EXTRAS: "Lovers and Haters" is a short spoof directed by Spike Lee where Mariah has to sit a few tables away from a group of people goofing on her. It's not very funny, but I did get a laugh from the comment that Mariah messed around with Roger Ebert and he still gave "Glitter" two thumbs down. Still, I didn't quite see the point - are we supposed to feel sorry for Mariah because of how people say nasty things behind her back?

A short "behind-the-scenes" featurette on the first disc offers a behind-the-scenes look at the tour, while a lengthier documentary on the second disc boasts a more in-depth look at the tour and plenty of thoughts from Mariah about structuring the performance and the performance of some of the songs. We also get a karaoke feature and credits. The final disc in the 3-DVD set offers ringtones, bonus offers, updates, a virtual store and virtual ticket subscription feature. The Blu-Ray compresses the features down to two discs.

Final Thoughts: "Adventures of Mimi" tour is mostly a top-notch big-budget touring production, which runs smoothly throughout most of the show. The DVD edition provides a very nice audio/video presentation, with a few nice supplemental features. The Blu-Ray edition provides some slight upgrades in the audio/video department, but most will likely be satisfied with the cheaper DVD set. Recommended for fans.
