Wash, The
The Movie: About a month or so ago, Lions Gate Films sent me The Wash on VHS to evaluate and most likely post a review for. But while I couldn't find the willpower to write the review, I did watch it, and surprisingly, enjoyed myself. The beauty of The Wash is that it's so bad, it's good. Snoop, Dr. Dre, D.J. Pooh and various other rap stars and comedians star in this film following one man as he tries to get enough money for rent after his car is repossessed. Sean (Dr. Dre) needs fast cash, and his friend Dee Loc (Snoop) suggests he work at the wash, which he begrudgingly does, rather than resorting to the sale of narcotics to raise cash as Dee Loc resorts to. But when Sean is made a manager and Dee Loc is still a lowly wash-boy, tensions flare and the movie takes off from there.
While watching the extras on this 2 disc DVD set (note: only one DVD - the other disc is a CD soundtrack - caveat emptor), I was watching the interview with director D.J. Pooh who boldly states, "When 'The Wash' comes out on DVD, go get that - that's the one you gotta have in your collection. Right between Friday and Scarface...The Wash." While most people would scoff at this notion, those who appreciate such good "bad" films will likely make room on the shelf. This B-movie has everything you'd want from a Snoop / Dr. Dre production - loud music, gratuitous nudity, and comic relief.
The Picture: Presented in glorious anamorphic widescreen, the picture is almost flawless. Since this was only rleased last year, it would be expected that the transfer be perfect - which it is. Quite a lot of the film takes place outdoors and the light is perfectly balanced with the few dark scenes also playing out beautifully. There were no noticeable flaws and the anamorphic transfer is a definite plus so we can enjoy the smoke and booty in widescreen glory.
The Sound: The sound, delivered 5.1 Dolby digital is quite good. The film features countless rap tracks and as such exhibits various lows with pounding bass. All the while, speech is clear and quality sound effects from this quality B-movie emanate from all around.
The Extras: Though this is advertised as a 2-disc set, the extras are few. Included as the 2nd disc is the original soundtrack from the film which features all your favorite rap songs, but aside from that, the actual extras on the disc are disappointing. Besides the standard trailer, and obligatory music video from the soundtrack, there's not much else to peruse. The Interviews on the disc are lacking with just the basic "junket" type interviews being included. They give very little insight into the actual film itself aside from the casting decisions and the idea behind the movie itself. The interviews are basically boring and I would recommend the "Premiere Coverage" instead. The interviews are a bit more fun to watch and show the cast in a much more relaxed atmosphere. While watching the Premiere coverage, you'll hear about hilarious behind-the-scenes takes, but alas, none appears on the disc itself, which would most likely make this disc much more worth the purchase price.
Conclusion: I watched The Wash with a friend and we laughed throughout. It's just one of those films that is so bad, it's good - similar to classic Dolemite (although Dolemite is a bit worse, but a bit better). Overall, The Wash is funny and has some great one-liners. The extras are lacking on this DVD set, but the included soundtrack might make up for that, unless, of course, you already own the soundtrack. My advice would be to rent the film before buying it - the film is an acquired taste (as evidenced by the poor reviews at MRQE), and if you like it, reserve that space on your DVD shelf between Friday and Scarface for it.
