The Movie:

In 2002, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition team went for a Latin theme, travelling to some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica, Mexico and Brazil to capture some of the favorite models - Yamilla Diaz-Rahi (who hosts), Heidi Klum, Molly Sims, Josie Maran (my favorite), Daniela Pestova, Elsa Benitez and others.

Again, these specials provide a nice visual accompaniment to the issue itself, allowing the viewer to not only see the models in-action, but also view some of the behind-the-scenes stories, including one model who wears a bathing suit made out of beer caps. There doesn't seem to be as many crises during this special as there were in some of the previous specials, but this 2002 edition is still entertaining and solid eye-candy, nonetheless.

The DVD

VIDEO: Trimark presents "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2002" in 1.33:1 full-frame. This is Trimark's first attempt at presenting this feature - previously, Image Entertainment and Sony have handled SI Swimsuit Special DVDs. Their work here is comparible and holds up quite nicely in comparison to the other studio's. Sharpness and detail are good, if not exceptional - obviously, there's a bit of a soft focus to this kinda thing, but nothing that takes away from the beauty of the models or background scenery. Aside from a few instances of shimmering, there weren't any concerns. Colors remained well-saturated and bright, with no smearing.

SOUND: This special is presented with a very nice stereo soundtrack that richly offers the Latin-themed music and the interviews.

MENUS: Basic animation livens an otherwise ordinary background.

EXTRAS: A trailer for Trimark Sports programs is hidden under the Lion's Gate logo. Trimark would have been smart to include a trailer for their other recent non-film release, "Anna Kournikova: Basic Elements".

Final Thoughts: Fans of the latest SI Swimsuit issue will likely find this tour of the production of the issue entertaining and enjoyable eye-candy. Audio/video quality is very nice, but some supplements (such as the ones included on the MTV: SI Swimsuit Uncensored DVD) would have been appreciated.
