Synopsis: In an nutshell, Nick Falzone (John Cusack) is an incredibly talented air traffic controller. In fact, some may say that he's the best in the entire New York region. He racks, stacks & packs planes in order of arrival like nobody's business. Without question, he is the best. That is until Russell Bell (Billy Bob Thornton) comes to town. Russell has come all the way from out west & was considered the best in his particular part of the world as well. Not one to share the spotlight, Nick "the Zone" Falzone, feels the need to prove to himself & all around that he is the best in everything. Basketball, Air Traffic Controlling & women, even though he is quite married. Russell, recognizing the challenge,is not one to be bested so, the two engage in mutual self destructive behavior until the best or rather most insane man wins.
Audio: The best parts about this film are the audio effects used to simulate the sounds of the massive flying engines these planes use to stay aloft. There is considerable effective use of the surrounds & sub when the real stars of the film (the planes) take center stage. Depending upon the sound level of your home theater, you may feel less at home & more like New York's Laguardia Airport.
Video: While the video was a very clean widescreen image, it was not anamorphic. Herein lies it's only failing. The colors were vibrant, the digitally rendered planes really took on a life of their own & the visual presentation went a long way to make them (the planes) look beleiveable.
Extras: The only extra on the disc is the trailer for the film. Nothing special. After seeing the trailer though, you may have second thoughts about seeing the actual film!
Overall: I do have one nice thing to say about the disc. The menus were nicely done. Nothing stunning but, nice to look at & the score that played over the menus was pretty neat. Now for the film itself...I really had to try & figure out why this movie was ever made! The subject matter was not even remotely interesting & the interactions between the players were all painfully predictable. The only saving grace in this entire film is Cate Blanchett. While her considerable talents were wasted on this film, she made it actually bearable. If she hadn't been in the film, I can only imagine how truly horrible a film this would have been. While it's no wild, wild, waste it is a considerable waste of your time.
