The Movie:

I certainly won't go into another discussion of the problems that the recording industry is currently suffering from again in this review. Simply stated, many say that they continue to download tracks from various sources on the internet and buy the CDs that they enjoy - however, many also complain of the outrageous prices that most stores still offer: while Best Buy and other chains frequently price as low as $9.99, the CDs themselves still list for $13.99, $14.99 or frequently, even higher.

Although prices have yet to come down considerably, studios have realized that additional supplements can be included on a DVD packaged with the CD release. This happened with a recent Eminem release and again with the new Dave Matthews Band album. Although I haven't seen the Eminem DVD, the Dave Matthews Band release - titled "Some Other Stuff" and included with their "Busted Stuff" CD - is essentially a DVD single. It includes live performances in 2001 (at Boulder, Co.) of "When The World Ends" and "Bartender", along with an audio-only 5.1 remix of "Bartender".

I can't say that I'm a hardcore fan of Dave Matthews Band, but I certainly still enjoy their music and thought their performance with Al Green in the marvelously filmed IMAX documentary "All Access" was certainly one of the highlights of that great film (which, sadly, still isn't on DVD). Overall, "Some Other Stuff", while brief, is still a nice little bonus for those picking up the "Busted Stuff" CD.

The DVD

VIDEO: The video quality for the 2 live performances varies considerably throughout each clip, although each is still certainly watchable. The picture can go from appearing sharp and well-defined in some of the close-ups to appearing rather soft and slightly "digital". Some light pixelation is noticed, but no other concerns were spotted. Certainly not great image quality, but not completely terrible, either.

SOUND: The audio on both the live performances and the 5.1 remix of "Bartender" fares better than the image quality. The 2.0 soundtracks for the live performances are pleasantly full sounding and boast fine clarity. The 5.1 audio of "Bartender" is even more enjoyable, a very natural sounding remix that smoothly uses the surrounds to envelop the listener. Listening to this audio-only 5.1 presentation, I really thought that most of the band's music would really work well in 5.1 and I think that, if DMB's albums were ever offered in DVD-Audio, they would meet with terrific sales.

MENUS: Basic, non-animated main menu.

EXTRAS: Nothing.

Final Thoughts: "Busted Stuff", from what I've listened to, is a highly enjoyable effort with the band's usual elements - exceptional instrumentals, soulful singing and fascinating lyrics. "Some Other Stuff", while not containing a whole lot of other stuff, is still a nice bonus. Both casual fans and hardcore Dave Matthews Band fans alike should pick this CD/DVD package up. Given that the DVD extra is probably limited, those who are interested should pick this one up quickly.
