Dancing with the Stars: Dance Off the Pounds
This installment of Dancing with the Stars claims it will help you "dance off the pounds" with three 15-minute routines--swing, jive and quickstep. While following this DVD my thoughts ranged from "Sweet! I can kind of swing!" to "Whoa whoa whoa, slow it down Miss Fast Talk McJive" and finally to "HAHAHA! Oh Dmitry..."
You see, Kym's swing routine is pretty easy to follow, albeit ridiculous and not very physically challenging. Lacey's jive routine is impossible to keep up with (and not just because I was fast forwarding through it). I gave up on that one quickly. Finally, Dmitry's complete inability to count in the cues for his quickstep routine is quality laugh out loud entertainment. Unfortunately, none of these things makes for a quality workout DVD.
Ranging from impossibly boring to simply impossible, this DVD lacks the happy medium that would make it worth your time.
Equipment Needed
No dignity required. Drop it at the door and flail around like a maniac. That's the closest you'll get to accomplishing the jive. Other than that you just need comfortable shoes and room to move.
Effectiveness
Considering the fact that I fast forwarded through 2/3 of this video (the jive and quickstep sections), I'd say it was pretty ineffective. Had I been able to keep up with Lacey's jive instruction, I might have gotten my heart rate up equivalent to a brisk uphill walk. But I'd rather just take a brisk uphill walk, wouldn't you?
Safety
Make sure you have plenty of room to avoid kicking furniture or pets.
Cast/Instructor
Kym does a decent job of teaching the swing. However, this may have something to do with it being an easier routine. Lacey dives into the jive with no mercy for stragglers. If you can't catch the first step, you're done. And it will not slow down. And Dmitry, oh Dmitry... For some reason the poor guy can't get his counting right so much of the 15-minute quickstep sequence is spent watching him gyrate awkwardly to fill the down time. He seems confused and mildly frustrated but does hilarious little shimmies when he doesn't know what else to do.
Music
There is a different song for each dance style but nothing you would recognize. Dmitry's inability to match his dance moves with the song signals a poor music choice for that set.
Set
The set is a toned down replica of the DWTS set, complete with flashing lights and gaudy gold staircase.
Video
The DVD is 1:78:1 widescreen and looks fine.
Negatives
I have nothing positive to say about this DVD. It is confusing, difficult to follow, ineffective and at times boring.
Conclusion
Skip this workout all together. If you can keep up with the terrible instruction, you might have some fun with it. But having fun and getting a great workout are not the same thing.
