The Movie

What man would not want to be like Golden Boy? He has a way with the ladies and turns them on. Problem is he just cannot figure out how to turn them off. Sounds like his life is pretty hard, eh?

This release includes the last 3 episodes in the Golden Boy OVA series. I have not seen the first 3 episodes, but this series was pretty easy to get into. This series is actually a comedy if you can believe it. Kintaro Oe (Golden Boy) picks up odd jobs on his journey and always happens to have a good-looking woman around his job.

In the first episode we have Kintaro stopping at an indoor pool in winter and seeing a good-looking young woman. He immediately gets a job as a swimming instructor that teaches children how to swim. He also has a challenge for the girl. If he can beat her in a swimming race in one month's time, he takes her.

In the second episode we have a girl that gets pleasure off of her motorcycle. Kintaro, who does house chores for the girl's father, keeps that image in his mind. The girl offers herself to Kintaro, but only if his bicycle can beat her motorcycle. The chase sequence is hilarious.

The last episode actually has Kintaro as a production administrator at an anime studio and having interesting ideas about such things as toilet seats. The last episode also touches on at least the previous 2 episodes and I would guess the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed these episodes. I had always heard good things about Golden Boy, and all the good things were true. This is a funny comedy series and I was a bit sad to see it end. This is one of those good light anime series to watch that will not cost much money to own.

The DVD

Video: This OVA series was done in the mid-90s. It is presented in a Full-Frame ratio and I noticed no visual defects.

Sound: Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and in English and Japanese language. The English track on this disc is actually quite good. The Japanese, as always, is good as well. It seems as if dubs are getting better and better as time progresses.

Menus: Laid out like Kintaro's notebook, the menus are easy to navigate with music in the background.

Extras: Opening and closing textless credits, some video shots and the US trailers for the show.

Final Thoughts: Golden Boy: Bound for Glory is a really good release. If you are looking for light-hearted and slightly adult fun, this is your ticket. I heartily recommend this disc and am going to go out and get the first disc as soon as I can. ADV continues to bring out quality products. Highly Recommended.
