Chris Botti: Night Sessions (Live)
Sony Music // Unrated // August 6, 2002
List Price: $19.98 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
The Movie:
"Night Sessions" presents acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti's 12/3/01 performance in Los Angeles to celebrate the artist's debut of the album of the same name. While Botti's performance and backup instrumentalists are excellent, special guests (including Sting, whose band Botti was once a member of) also do come up on stage at various moments throughout the night to join them.
Songs include: Lisa, Streets Ahead, Miami Overnight, In The Wee Small Hours, All Would Envy, Alone in the City, Regrooveable, Easter Parade, Why Not, The Facts About Jimmy, Steps of Positano, Moon Over Bourbon Street and Blue Horizon.
The DVD
VIDEO: Although nearly all of the online retailers that I browsed through stated that this concert is offered in 1.33:1 full-frame, the presentation is actually in non-anamorphic widescreen, at an aspect ratio that appears to be 1.78:1. The picture quality is generally good, although it can vary at times. Sharpness and detail are quite solid in the close-ups, although some of the wider shots can have a bit of a soft and slightly "digital" appearance.
Flaws were noticed throughout, although they really weren't too bothersome. Shimmering is apparent during several moments, while some light pixelation and slight edge enhancement were also spotted. Colors, however, were very nicely represented, as the colors of the background set and stage carpet were vivid and rich.
SOUND: The concert is presented in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and LPCM 2.0. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is actually a very pleasant and enjoyable effort. Botti's trumpeting (and Sting's vocals, when he comes up on stage) is isolated to the center channel, while his back-up instrumentalists' work is offered by the front main speakers and reinforced by the surrounds. Audio quality was excellent, as instrumentals were captured with solid clarity, detail and warmth. Occasional, polite crowd noise is mainly delivered by the surrounds.
MENUS: While the menus are basic and non-animated, they are at least fairly stylish.
EXTRAS: Interviews with Chris Botti, Sting and Shawn Colvin are the featured supplements. Rounding out the extras are a photo gallery, profile and a terrific 5.1 audio-only remix of Botti's "Through An Open Window".
Final Thoughts: Although I can't say I'm much of a jazz fan, Botti's performance was excellent and his songs were wonderfully catchy and light, relaxing listening. Recommended for Botti fans or those who enjoy jazz in general.
