The Movie

Love Hina – Love Hurts is the 4th release of this series comprising of episodes 13-16. I talked a little about the history of Love Hina in my review of the 1st release, so I will not go into that very much here. It looks like Love Hina is back on track after the last disc that I did not think was that great and got a lot of feedback about it.

Episode 13 centers on Shinobu, with her thinking about her first kiss she has not had yet. She is very scared of her first kiss, so she ends up asking the others about it. Along with her worries about her first kiss, Shinobu's school friend Akiko seems to be getting closer to Su than she is to Shinobu. This makes Shinobu very unhappy and very jealous of Su. Trying to help Shinobu in her plight about the first kiss, Su makes a kissing machine that ends up kissing Kitsune and Motoko (for what seems like the first time) instead of Shinobu. Shinobu eventually gets her first kiss, but from whom?

Episode 14 begins with us finding out that the house has no money. Everyone has to go out and find a job to keep the house afloat for the month. Keitaro starts to work at a manga firm, but quits. Keitaro then takes a job as an assistant to Professor Seta at Tokyo University, the same guy that pretty much ran over Keitaro before his last test. Seta's "daughter" Sarah likes to beat Keitaro up a lot, but Keitaro wants to keep his job. It also seems that Naru had a crush on Seta a while ago and Kitsune tries to keep her away from him. Problem is Naru seems to want to get a job at the University as well. In the end it seems that everyone from the house ended up getting a job at Tokyo University.

Episode 15 starts with Sarah being brought home by Keitaro. She immediately causes trouble for the house tenants. Naru runs into Seta for the first time and she becomes a bumbling fool like Keitaro is when he is around people he likes a lot. Sarah runs away and the group falls into an ancient turtle civilization. It seems there are thousands of turtles that live behind the house. The group ends up getting trapped in the cave and Keitaro lets out that Naru loves Seta. Seta says he loves Naru, but he also loves everyone else.

Episode 16 begins with everyone finding out that the house also has a teahouse by the seashore. This will make them a lot of money and the kids in the area will have a lot of fun. So, the group puts on a play, but Su ends up bringing the teahouse down to the ground with her "special effects". Seta comes and finds a new spot for the play to be done, but he has a catch. The characters have to be switched around to make the play sexier than it currently is. At one point Naru almost kisses Keitaro as the little children are egging her on to do so, but a geyser shoots from the middle hole and that is the end of that.

Although there is no real movement toward Keitaro finding out who the young girl was in these episodes, they are very lighthearted and move the storyline somewhat along. I liked this release far more than the last one, I felt a lot of the wind this series had was taken out in the last 4 episodes. Love Hina is now back on track.

The DVD

Video: This is a television presentation, so it is displayed in Full-Frame. This series is from 2000 and is excellently displayed here. I saw no noticeable errors in the video presentation, much like the other releases.

Sound: Since this is a television show, this is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0. This has both Japanese and English audio. Being a dub listener I listened to the whole thing in English. Once again it seems the Japanese track has more full sound and more use of the surround speakers than the English dub has when I checked it at certain spots.

Menus: A basic menu with the theme song being played.

Extras:

Trailers: Betterman, Escaflowne: The Movie, Saber Marionette J to X and Angel Links.

The Making of Love Hina: An interview with several people who worked on the English translated version of Love Hina. Voice actress/ADR Director Wendee Lee is interviewed the most. She did the voices for Su and Tama the turtle. She also talks about writing the English script for the show. They also talk to the producer and editor of the show. Lee talks about honoring the original Japanese script. They also talk to the Production IG Operations Manager that makes sure the English is not far off from the Japanese script. It is obvious they took a lot of steps to make the English version close to the Japanese version.

Chracter Photo Gallery: Mitsune Konno and Mitsumi Otohime are the characters in this on-going extra through the discs.

Final Thoughts: Love Hina is finally back on track after a disappointing disc 3. The episodes here are quite light-hearted, but they also move the story along very slowly. I can overlook the fact that there was nothing about Keitaro and his promise to the young girl way back when, I am guessing that is coming in the upcoming episodes. Highly Recommended.
