The Movie

The ending of the Steel Angel Kurumi comes to us in the fourth release. With the build-up at the end of the third disc, this disc was absolutely stunning. Although this series is very much in the "fanservice" category, it also has a heart and makes you feel sympathy for the characters contained within the series.

I have a hard time talking about spoilers given that I am reviewing this the week before it comes out to retailers. So I am going to try to give an overall idea of these last episodes. All the questions about Kurumi's secret powers are answered and she goes up against her hardest foe yet. Also what happens in these episodes may affect the future in good or bad ways.

The ending of this show was just exciting. I am trying to think of another anime series that packed so much in so little time. Cowboy Bebop and its last two episodes come to mind, but they were paced much like the rest of CB: mostly slow and methodical. Here there is a lot of emotion and a lot hanging in the balance for not only the characters, but the future as well. This was an exciting finish to a show that may be overlooked because of the fanservice shown by the cover itself. I must implore people to go out and buy this series. Do not just bypass it because it has a (covered-up) naked woman on each of the covers, buy it because it tells a great story in a short amount of time (24 episodes at 15 minutes each).

The DVD

Video: This series was done in 1999-2000. The quality of the full-frame video shown here is exquisite. The quality of this show is OVA quality and it is hard to believe it was done on television.

Sound: Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and in English and Japanese language. The English track on this disc is wonderful. The surround effects are also used quite well and overall this is a great sound presentation.

Menus: Pretty much the same as the first disc with a duplication of the cover art with gears that rotate as you go through the menus.

Extras: There is a plethora of extras on this disc

Interview with Angels, Part II: Continuing from all the way in the first disc, this is the conclusion to the interview. DO NOT watch this before you watch the episodes as it will give a lot away, including the part the voice actress was quiet about in the first disc. This is very informative, much like the first part was.

Production Sketches: Different sketches of all of the characters.

Travelogue: Highlights various areas used in the series.

Character Bios: Information on all the main characters in the series.

Translator Notes: Notes for those that wish to know more about certain words in the Japanese language that are presented here. This is a lot like liner notes that most companies put into the insert.

Extended Episode Previews: Longer previews of the episodes, all in Japanese with English subtitles.

Nakahito Fortune Teller(DVD-ROM): A PDF file of the Nakahito Fortune Teller. Have not checked this yet.

Final Thoughts: This last disc of Steel Angel Kurumi is not to be missed, especially if you have watched the rest of the show. I implore people again to go out and get this series. I know I will be picking up the second disc as soon as possible, the only disc I am missing. The extras on this whole series were numerous and in-depth. I wish more companies did this with extras. Highly Recommended and if this ever came out in a box set it may just get the Collector's stamp on it.
