Review by Chuck Arrington | posted March 17, 2000 | E-mail the Author
Synopsis: There is a murderer afoot who takes his victims lives and leaves behind mysterious pieces of a bizarre puzzle. The only person who may be able to make sense of these horrific clues is Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington). He was a top homicide investigator until a freak accident paralyzed him from the neck down incapacitating him. Now he is forced to be a voyeur as he watches the police bungle investigation after investigation. That is until he teams up with Amelia Donaghy (Angelina jolie). The two work symbiotically to solve the crimes & uncover the killer before he claims yet another victim. All their good work does not however, go unnoticed. As the killer senses the cops are closing in he selects new targets…Rhyme & Donaghy. This cat & mouse game has all the punch to satisfy your craving for a good thriller. The Bone Collector is a tingling suspenseful ride that will leave you chilled to the bone!

Audio: Universal is on point delivering both the Dolby 5.1 and DTS channels on some of their titles! The Bone Collector is one such title. While I do not have a DTS encoder, I can't elaborate on its nuances however, I can speak on the 5.1 platform and it simply sizzles! The surrounds are put to wonderful use, with audio so realistic you'll be looking over your shoulder from time to time! The sub is also perfectly used to provide just enough atmosphere to make your hair stand on end. In addition, there is a great commentary provided by the Director, Phillip Noyce that provided some really clever information regarding the setting up of scenes and further insights into some of the motivations of the actors needed to achieve the desired effect! Great Stuff indeed!

Video: Crystalline Anamorphic widescreen presentation is the highest accolade I can give this feature and it is well deserved! There were only a few imperfections noted, but they didn't affect the overall quality of the presentation to the point of annoyance. That having been said, this transfer is definitely one of the nicest I've seen!

Extras: While its not identified as such, the features provided could make The Bone Collector one fine Special Edition. While Universal has a history of jam packing their titles, they fall just shy on this one however, there is just enough information present to make it worthwhile! There is a spotlight on location, which is really an intimate portrait of the actors, cast & crew and the director as they explain the intricacies & niceties of working on location. The standard production notes, cast & filmmaker bios, a trailer for the feature, The Universal showcase which boasts a trailer for upcoming Universal title, The Skulls, and DVD-ROM features that link you to the web-site for the film as well as provide access to the script.

Overall: Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors. He brings a level of intensity & believability to his roles that really showcase his enormous talent and acting ability. Additionally, Angelina jolie is carving out a niche as one of the hottest up & coming actors to hit the scene in quite a while. It's a joy watching the two interact. The Bone Collector and other films of this genre owe a debt of thanks to Silence of the Lambs. That groundbreaking film paved the way for a host of successors. Not all have been good films but, The Bone Collector and Se7en fit nicely into that category. There may be areas of predictability where you've seen something done before but, overall, this is a thrill ride with very few stops but a whole lot of bumps & screams! Definitely worth checking out!
