Good ol' Clint! The American icon of the squinty-eyed unknown outlaw from the old west brings his directing talents to the screen as medal of honor winner, Gunnery Seargent Thomas Highway, a tough, hardened, beat up veteran Marine with attitude spread thick, raspy voice and extra squint in his eyes.

Thomas Highway is finally returning home to his old unit and tasked with shaping up a group of lazy marines who drastically need motivation and discipline. He butts heads with the Major Malcomb Powers (played by Everett McGill), the commanding officer who lacks combat experience and has a serious problem with an enlisted man under him who has a lot more military experience. This conflict makes for some squinty-eyed staring contests between the confident Highway, and the hostile militant Major Powers who is anxious to prove himself. Thomas Highway is trying to win back the heart of his ex-wife, Aggie (played by Marsha Mason) by learning about women through reading womens magazines. After Thomas whips his troops into shape, they begin to have respect for him and themselves. At the end they are called into action to rescue college student on the island of Grenada. The war scenes here are pretty hokey and fake looking, but they serve the film fairly well in the time alotted.

This is certainly not one of Clints best movies, but this doesn't detract from its entertainment value. There is plenty of great one-liners and classic Clint to love. This is one of those films you can watch without really paying a lot of attention, especially since the film has been played to death on television without the smorgasboard of cussing and naked ladies (just kidding - there is only one brief naked lady). I doubt there are many people who have missed this film so I will move on to the DVD itself.

VIDEO: All-new digital 1.85:1 Anamorphic widescreen trasnfer. The video is surprisingly crisp and well detailed. The blacks are very black and rich with very little artifacting. There were only a couple of very quick scratches and errors I noticed in the film master, but only about 15 seconds worth. The encoding is very tight and this makes for a very well rendered picture.

AUDIO: Remastered in 5.1 and sounding much better than I remember it. The dialog is very well seperated into the center channel and there is a decent amount of punch in the LFE channel during the war scenes. English and French tracks are offered in 2 channel stereo along with subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Portugese

MENUS: The menu designs are static and fitting for the movie.

BONUS MATERIALS: Cast/Screenwriter film highlights and Theatrical Trailer are all that is offered.

Summary: If you love Clint then you have surely seen this film already. I really like it but I have seen it so many times that I only watch it now if I am doing something else and want it on in the background. I still get a kick out of the Clint and the personality he creates in Thomas Highway. It's truly a "Tough Guy" kind of film with a little heart thrown in.
