National Geographic: The Photographers

The Movie: Simply put, this movie is breathtaking as are most National Geographic specials. This documentary goes behind the camera to capture the trials and tribulations of the photographer as they try and get the best shot for the magazine and how hard it can be at times to get the perfect shot. The film not only shows footage of photographers getting "the shot," but also interviews them and gives the viewer a look into the actual job of being a photographer. The pictures that these photographers are able to get are simply stunning, and seeing how much work goes into these complex photos is simply amazing. A very good movie, although only 55 minutes looking behind the lens.

The Picture: The picture is quite good. Featuring its original 1.33:1 TV ratio transfer, the picture is as good as you would expect. The photos shown on screen are crisp and clear and there were no noticeable defects. Especially good was the bonus program, A Passion for Africa, and the short video of the male lion tracking down a hyena - slo-mo and beautifully done, this is a fine example of why DVD is superior to other formats. The picture was very crisp, including the trace amounts of dust kicked up by the lion and the eventual take-down. A must-see.

The Sound: The sounds isn't anything special, but it surely doesn't detract from the disc. You're not going to expect to have any special sound effects with this documentary, and there aren't any. The animal sounds are great and easy to pick up along with the dialogue. No problems in the audio department that I could find.

The Extras: The extras aren't quite enough to write home about, but are ample enough to deserve a good rating. The bonus program, A Passion for Africa, as mentioned above is a great addition chronicling the life of two photographers/filmmakers in Africa as they try and document the real Africa that tourists will never see. The Photo gallery is disappointing because while throughout the disc you are exposed to literally hundreds of photos, there are only 12 in the gallery. If you really want to view photos, watch the feature, don't go to the gallery. The photographer biographies are nothing special, but a nice addition nonetheless. They provide a little background that you don't get from the interviews and provide some interesting information. There are 3 previews of other National Geographic programs and all are quite short, although the Endangered Species video looks to be pretty interesting.

Conclusion: A great 1-hour documentary along with another short "bonus" documentary make this a great disc. It gives a great look into the lives of the photographers and their mishaps and eventual spectacular photos. The disc also features hundreds of amazing photos from National Geographic along with video from the photo shoots that is breathtaking. A great documentary with some amazing stories. This is a great disc for anyone that loves to watch any National Geographic specials on TV or loves the magazine. I definitely plan on adding more National Geographic DVDs to my collection.
