I'll wager that sooner than later we'll be seeing Game 6 of the 2011 World Series - with the Cardinals battling back from possible elimination against the Rangers - as one of these "Baseball's Greatest Games" releases from MLB. I think few would argue that would certainly be an appropriate entry, but until then it's time to step into the time machine and head to the hideously synthetic Metrodome on Sunday, October 27, 1991 where Game 7 between the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins defined the phrase "pitcher's duel". It was John Smoltz vs Jack Morris on the bump, and man what a matchup it was.

It seems a little silly to dance around the outcome of this game, as if this were the plot of a suspense film. The Twins win in it 1-0 on a bottom of the 10th on a one out bases loaded single to left center by Gene Larkin. Relax, it's happened and it's history. But that doesn't change the enjoyment of this game, which was just 1/7th of a World Series that was overall completely exhilarating, despite the aforementioned annoying presence of the cavernous Metrodome, the hometown "noise factor" and that unforgivable artificial turf. All that can be overlooked for 10 3/4 innings of scoreless baseball in a do-or-die setting, between two of the dominant throwers in the game at the time.

For Fall Classic magic moments, there were more than enough to go around. In what seems unimaginable is that Morris pitched a shutout into the 10th inning, a remarkable feat that almost never happens anymore, let alone during a Game 7 scenario. Smoltz, no pitching slouch either, lasted into the bottom of the 8th in a brilliant scoreless performance almost overshadowed by the endurance and control of Morris. Braves fans, however, will likely always remember the what-could-have-been 8th inning, when Atlanta's Lonnie Smith running from first seemingly fell for a grade school decoy play by Twins' second baseman Chuck Knoblauch on a ball hit into the outfield. Smith's baserunning error slowed him down and held him at third: Smith never scored, and baseball history was quickly re-written.

I have to applaud MLB on these "Baseball's Greatest Games", because for fans of the sport this is infinitely better than a simple highlight reel or best-of compilation. This is the full game, with the chance to relive one of the finest post season pitching displays of recent memory between Jack Morris and John Smoltz. Announcer Jack Buck - as the scoreless 9th inning began - referred to the game simply as "magnificent". Couldn't have said it better myself, Jack.

THE DVD
Video
The 1.33:1 fullframe transfer, as is sadly the case with most of these MLB releases, is simply fair-to-middling. There's plenty of ringing and shimmer, but the action is still quite watchable.

Audio
A generic 2.0 stereo mix is provided, delivering clean yet unremarkable voice quality, available either with the network CBS television coverage or the Twins radio play-by-play.

Extras
There is no supplemental material on this release.

Final Thoughts
MBL dishes up another classic Fall Classic matchup, with the Smoltz vs Morris pitching duel thriller of Game 7 of the 1991 World Series between the Braves and Twins.

An easy recommendation for baseball diehards. You know who you are.
