National Geographic: Surviving Everest
The Movie: National Geographic has done it again with this superb disc. Featuring Sir Edmund Hillary, this disc gives a look at what it takes to climb Everest. It gives first hand accounts at the trials, tribulations, heartache, and joy that comes with this trek. I was thoroughly engaged throughout this short film (less than an hour) and enjoyed it immensely.
The Picture: The picture is superb. Although it is presented in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio (TV) and obviously not anamorphic, it has good, crisp colors along with good contrast between the black and the white of the snow.
The Sound: Not much to review here, the disc doesn't feature any extraordinary sound enhancements due to the fact that it was made for the TV, but is also doesn't feature any degregations. Nothing detracts from this beautiful movie, but on the other hand, the sound doesn't enhance it really either.
The Extras: The extras are pretty good. The interview with Sir Edmund Hillary is a treat, but the rest of the extras are mediocre at best. The photo gallery consists of less than 10 photos just captured from the film - nothing new here. The Mount Everest locator is just a map of the world with Everest highlighted and the Trivia Quiz, while fun, isn't anything special.
Conclusion: In conclusion, this is a beautiful disc with a great feature presentation. The extras are plentiful, but not very interesting. The only reason that you'd want this disc is for the feature about Everest and the feature is very good. The price is a bit steep, but not as high as others I've seen. All in all a good disc - it's up to you to decide if it's worth it.
