The Movie: Nominated this year for an Academy Award for feature length documentary, Wim Wenders exploration of the Buena Vista Social Club, and resulting unification is a touching and musical look at the lives of these men who single-handedly transformed Cuban music. We follow Ry Cooder as he travells throughout Cuba and New York with these legendary musicians and interviews them. Always singing, always jovial, these long-overlooked musicians deserved this movie and their music deserves the attention it is receiving.

The Picture: Filmed mostly with a Sony Steadycam and not much technical gadgets and gizmos, the picture is the best you can expect. Crisp and clear throughout, I didn't notice any problems nor did I see any blemishes. The Anamorphic presentation is also a great plus for this disc as it looked great in this ratio.

The Sound: What is a documentary about musicians without sound? Buena Vista Social Club features rich sounding brass instruments and crisp vocals. The sound is superb on this disc and if you don't turn it up to hear the spectacular music, there's something wrong with you.

The Extras: The extras are ample, and all of them are a great addition to the disc. The audio commentary with Wim Wenders is a welcome addition and I enjoyed listening to it throughout - it gave great background to the movie along with points and features you might have missed the first time around. The deleted (labelled additional) scenes are also great - all of them feature a song or scene left out of the final cut and all are a welcome addition.

Conclusion: In conclusion, Buena Vista Social Club is a welcome addition to my collection. I first saw this movie on VHS when Artisan sent me a screener and I loved it. When the DVD came out with all the extras and enhanced sound, I couldn't pass it up. The musical pieces are all superb and the deleted scenes add to the movie. The commentary is also a good look into the filming and background. I enjoyed the disc immensely and if you like this kind of music or documentaries, make sure you don't miss this one.
