Movie: The movie is really two movies in one. One part of the movie deals with the obvious, Nick Nolte's having to care for his 6 year old daughter when his ex-wife dumps her on him. This is the part that was heavily advertised and you'll read about on the dvd cover. The other part deals with Hollywood dealmaker Albert Brooks and his relationship with Julie Kavner. His insecurities drive her crazy and this aspect of the movie was far more interesting to me although not the actual Director who limits Brook's insights to a handful of scenes that could've easily been the basis for a much better movie by themselves. The backdrop for both stories was how Hollywood works and supposedly provides some great insider knowledge to those of us who have no real idea how all the crummy movies get through the corporate run studio mills. To be fair, I had fun watching the movie but it was a guilty pleasure since I honestly thought that the Nick Nolte part of the movie would've been a fine light comedy if the good parts (with Brooks) were trimmed out. Hollywood makes many such schizophrenic movies all the time but that doesn't mean we have to like them. Nolte's not bad in his role and the child, Whittni Wright, was well cast as the brat, but, as mentioned, the supporting cast outshined them by a big margin.

Picture: The picture was presented in a choice of either 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen or the Joe six-pack full screen. The picture looked very crisp and clear perhaps because the movie was "remastered in high definition".

Sound: The sound was presented in 2.0 Dolby English with subtitles available in Japanese, English, Spanish and French. It was also clear with few problems.

Extras: 3 trailers

Final Thoughts: I've read where this was originally a musical, set to tunes by the artist formerly known as Prince. I like Prince's work but man would that have been bizarre. It would've also been a great and unusual dvd extra if someone had the snap to provide it. In any case, the movie wasn't too bad but there was little to recommend unless you've watched all the similar bachelor stuck with bratty kid movies and the Hollywood is a tough and nonsensical place movies. Albert Brooks fans will want to at least rent this one and be sure to pay attention to Julie Kavner's role as she was a gem here too.
