SYNOPSIS:
"The Enterprise feels like a house with all the children gone…no, more empty even than that. The death of Spock is like an open wound…"-Admiral James T. Kirk, Star Trek III

With the defeat of Khan, the Enterprise and her crew are limping home to something less than a hero's welcome. Spock is dead & McCoy seems to be losing his mind. The Enterprise is battle scarred and in dire need of extensive repair. All seems empty until Sarek; Spock's father pays a visit to Kirk and advises him of the immortality of Spock's Katra, his living sprit. However, Spock's immortality is conditional. In order for Spock to "live" his Katra must be re-fused into his body, which should have burned up in the atmosphere of the Genesis planet into which it was jettisoned. Additionally, Genesis and everything having anything to do with it have been quarantined and declared off limits to everyone, including Kirk & the crew of the Enterprise. In a battle against time, the Federation & those pesky Klingons, Kirk must identify the "keeper of the Katra" find & retrieve Spock's body and then take both of them to Vulcan where Spock's Katra & body can be reunited. The Search for Spock is an incredible journey through space with quite a few unexpected twists & turns that will keep you glued to your seat. Great film!

Audio:
The audio for Star Trek III is nothing short of awesome! With a newly remastered digital 5.1 platform your home theater will be jumping to be sure! The use of the surrounds & the sub are really great. There is sufficient surround presence that provides an awesome audio presence. I think this is the best audio presentation I've heard since Insurrection & First Contact! All I can say is sit back & enjoy the aural roller coaster ride STIII will take you on!

Video:
Paramount has really gone all out in producing first-rate anamorphic widescreen transfers for this last batch of Star Trek titles. Star Trek III has got to be the most beautifully rendered title in the Star Trek series to date! The reds are deep & true & there is no bleeding of any kind! There are actually colors in this edition that I have never seen before & I have seen this film at least 100 times! Additionally, the blacks are rich & true. Easily, a reference level disc!

Extras:
Sadly, this is the only place in which this disc is lacking. The only extra included is the trailer for the film. While it did bring back some wonderful memories, it isn't enough to really count it as an extra. The quality of the trailer was OK. It wasn't great & it wasn't terrible it was merely OK. Paramount could really go to a little extra effort & put out some pretty decent SE's for these titles but I'm afraid that idea is lost on them. Going back this far, there could be an argument for the lack of pre-existing additional materials however, that's no excuse for the titles produced in later years. With no SE's in pre-production & no hint at whether there will even be any SE's for these films, this is the best bet going.

Overall:
STIII is an incredibly underrated entry in the Star Trek film series. The atmosphere & overall production of the feature are in a word…awesome. Now let's get to the curse. There are those who feel there is a curse on all the odd numbered titles. In the case of Star Trek 5 & 7(Generations) there might be some truth to that curse but for the balance of the features the curse is overrated. STIII is a richly produced effort that embodies some of the best moments of Trek. In his directorial debut Leonard Nimoy put together a film that is really first-class. Star Trek III is definitely a keeper and easily highly recommended!
