Synopsis:
While on vacation in Yosemite national Park, Kirk, Spock & Mc Coy are rousted by an emergency Shuttle arrival. Apparently, a Vulcan has taken Federation, Klingon & Romulan Ambassadors hostage on Nimbus III, the Planet of galactic Peace. With no other help available, The Enterprise is called to assess the situation & take whatever action is necessary to quell this "insurrection". When the Enterprise arrives things are not what they seem & the captives have become the captors! The "charismatic" Vulcan Sybok has somehow convinced those he held captive to assist him in his quest. Sybok believes that "God" has been speaking to him from the center of the galaxy. Not only has "God" been speaking to him but he has requested that Sybok bring him a Starship so that he may spread his essence throughout the cosmos. That begs the question, "what does GOD need with a starship?" Evidently someone has been role-playing. In any event, Sybock & his band of followers gain control of the Enterprise & set a course for the center of the Galaxy. Before all is lost Kirk will have to regain control of the Enterprise, de-program his "enlightened" crew & once again save the galaxy from the absolute destruction that awaits it at the all too mysterious "Great Barrier".

Audio:
Bar none, Star Trek V has the absolute best sounding score/soundtrack. The music is simply marvelous. It's so full of emotion it's almost a character itself. With the newly remastered Digital 5.1 platform, it's just plain… heavenly! I can't begin to tell you just how powerfully impressive the new 5.1 master is for this film. The surrounds & sub are put to such great use that it's almost like listening to a whole new movie.

Video:
I've said it before; Paramount has a great history of releasing beautiful anamorphic widescreen transfers for its Star Trek features. Sadly, this is not one of them. While the transfer for this title is very clean & sharp, I can't for the life of me figure out why this title wasn't given anamorphic treatment. The film as it's presented is quite beautiful but anamorphic is always the way to go. The other problem I have with STV is the special effects department. I don't know who made the decision but these special effects are so cheesy that they stink! I mean you can actually smell the rank cheese while watching these effects. This is so unlike the balance of the series you can easily write The Final Frontier off as something akin to a mind fart or rather maybe just a fart in general. Given the poorly written script, you'd think they'd at least spring for some half way decent special effects but that again is not the case. Crystalline images just, poorly executed crystalline images.

Extras:
Here extra extra! As usual, the extras are restricted to trailers for the film. In this case there are two trailers for the feature. Nothing else.

Overall:
My brother David, & I refer to this entry as the comedic adventures of the blundering Enterprise! Shatner directed this stinker & it plays a lot like his novels & that short-lived TV series of his Tek Wars. Now don't get me wrong, I do enjoy this film. Not at all as much as the other entries in the franchise but, I do find enjoyment in this particular installment. There is an awful lot of humor in this film. There are some really great Trek moments as well but some of the things in the Final Frontier are just way too awful! This is definitely a fan only entry. If you are looking for all the things that make Star Trek so great & endearing, you probably need to look elsewhere. I'll admit that as a fan I'm gonna look for things to like in this film and I have to admit I did find a lot to like. On that same note I'll admit I found a lot to really dislike as well. Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier is a mixed bag of humor, drama & in some cases ridiculous situations & awful special effects. Again, only if you are a fan of the franchise & have to have all of the movies!
