Star Trek : Generations

Synopsis:
Stardate: The 23rd century. Retired Starfleet officers, James T. Kirk, Montgomery Scott and Pavel Checkov are guests of honor aboard the newly christened Enterprise-B. A test run takes an unexpected unexpected turn, however, when the Starship encounters two vessels trapped inside the Nexus, a mysterious energy ribbon. During a perilous rescue attempt, Kirk is swept out into space.

Seven decades later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D rescue an El Aurian physicist named Soran from an embattled outpost seemingly in the very depths of the galaxy. Unbeknownst to Picard, Soran harbors a deadly plan that includes the destruction of the Enterprise and millions of lives. Now Picard's only hope for a future rests within the Nexus…and a legendary captain from the past. Generations ties together the old & the new, passing the baton from the original cast to the Next Generation. Sounds pretty good doesn't it! Too bad the film didn't at all live up to the hype of the promo materials.

Audio:
Herein lies the best part of the movie, it's audio presentation. The Dolby Digital 5.1 remastered audio sparkles with clarity. There is sufficient movement within the surrounds & the sub at the very beginning and toward the end of the film to satisfy you craving for a decent aural experience at. The middle portion of the film is something of a vacuum in regards to it's audio content but, it does pick up towards the end of the feature as stated above.

Video:
Generations was the first Trek disc produced so, I guess Paramount was wetting it's feet in the creation of this disc. As such, the Widescreen presentation of this disc while beautiful in some areas is not at all as wonderfully crafted as the Trek III, Trek IV, First Contact or Insurrection discs. Don't get me wrong, it's very watchable but the print could have been just crystalline. Just to name a couple of the most obvious of the glitches: There were instances where the colors could have been truer & the blacks could have been deeper. With its lack of an anamorphic support, coupled with the transfer errors on this title, Generations is a tie for the worst transfer of a Trek film. The other being Trek VI.

Extras:
While "Special Features" is emblazoned on the back of the case, as you well know, there isn't even a trailer for the title included on the disc! Nothing, nada, zilch, cero! I have no idea what was on the guy or gal's mind that produced this disc. And I'm sorry but, English captions, Scene selection & Spanish subs are not at all what I define as "Special Features". I mean, most of these features accompany at least 85% of the discs that are produced today anyway! In a www.thedigitalbits.com interview, the subject of re-doing this title along with STVI was broached with a Paramount rep at Leonard Nimoy's recent appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Beverly Hills. The word given however is "no comment" so, hopefully, Paramount will revisit these two discs & flood them with "REAL" special features! We can all hope can't we!

Overall:
I have to admit, I enjoyed seeing Kirk, Scotty & Checkov on the bridge of the Enterprise-B but the plot of this movie simply put…stinks. The visuals were pretty cool; especially the destruction of the Enterprise-D but all the cool effects can't make up for a rotten script. I have to say it, I would have preferred Kirk stay dead or at least remain in the Nexus rather than have him jumping around with Picard fighting Soran. And what's up with Soran anyway? He's not really a villain now is he?! He's just a very determined man. His character really wasn't threatening in the least. Heck, the bad guy in Galaxy Quest had more chutzpah than this limp worm! And that was a parody! Star TrekVI ended wonderfully. A fitting end to the theatrical runs of the original cast. There was no need to have any of them in Generations. Understanding the novelty of it all, the bulk of the cast declined to participate in this feature & bravo for them! Generations could have been a great entry in to the big screen exploits of the Next Gen cast & crew. Unfortunately, it was a mistake from beginning to end. There were some great visuals but eye candy is no excuse for a poor film. If you are a fan you'll want to have it for the balance of your collection but, if you were a casual observer, I'd advise avoiding this one.
