Mystery, Alaska
Mystery, Alaska is the story of a small town that only knows hockey. Every Saturday, the ten best hockey players in the town randomly divide into teams to face each other in friendly competition. Russell Crowe is excellent in his role as the aging hockey player who's a mentor to his teammates; Burt Reynolds turns in a pretty good performance as the town's judge; and Hank Azaria shines as the town "outcast" who writes an article for Sports Illustrated about the hockey players of Mystery. Charles' (Hank Azaria) article is what sets the movie into motion - his article spurns a challenge with the New York Rangers. Mystery's players then band together to practice and build up their team and hone their skills, leading to the dramatic confrontation... But it takes too long to get there, and that's where one of the faults in the movie lies. Also, the movie tries to develop the entire cast of characters - all ten hockey players, Charles, the Mayor (Colm Meaney), the Judge, etc. - and while interesting at first, its easy to lose track of who's who and what they've been up too.
Picture:
The 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer is excellent - the only flaw I could detect was near the end of the movie. It appeared to be a faint green "splotch," exactly like in the Insider. Other than that, the picture is perfect.
Sound:
The sound is 5.1, but as this isn't an action heavy feature, most of the speakers aren't utilized. However, near the end, the bass is given a workout, as are the front speakers.
Extras:
For extras, the disc includes both the theatrical trailer for Mystery, Alaska and a featurette. The featurette is about 4 1/2 minutes long and contains some footage from the movie, interviews with the principal actors and director, and also some footage from filming. Interesting, although too short. Also, trailers for Sixth Sense and Happy Texas are automatically played before the disc goes to the main menu; however, if you wish to see them again, you can select them from the menu.
Summary:
To sum up, Mystery, Alaska is like "Rocky" on ice - the underdogs face off against seemingly unbeatable foes - will they overcome and triumph victorious? The length and broad cast of developing characters don't tarnish the film much; if you're a fan of hockey or underdog pictures and don't mind a lack of extras, you'll be at home here.
