Murphy's Romance
The last thing Emma Moriarty expected to find in Eunice, Arizona was love. Sally Field plays the gutsy Emma. A divorced mother eager to make it as a horse trainer on a small desert ranch. Enter the town's most eligible widower, Murphy Jones, as played by James Garner. The loveable, freewheeling pharmacist befriends Emma & eventually comes-a-courting as they say. But just when Emma may have found her Mr. Right, her ex-husband, Bobby Jack pops into the picture. The question is, which suitor will win the hand of the fair horse trainer? If you know like I do, you'll hope Murphy's Romance wins out!
Audio:
The audio is a disappointing mono platform that is lackluster at it's very best. It would seem that if you are going to go to the time & effort to produce a disc, you could at least remaster the audio to reflect a stereo playback or even a 5.1 presentation. Sadly, Columbia Tri-Star is hit or miss with their titles. This is definitely a miss. This really bothers me because it's a good film that could have only been made better by the proper audio transfer.
Video:
The Video is a pretty solid anamorphic presentation that does wonders for the dusty back woods country of Arizona! There were just a few flecks but other than that I really didn't notice any other imperfections in the transfer. The fleshtones at times may look a bit washed out however, that can be attributed to the great deal of filming that was done outside under the sun.
Extras:
There are trailers galore on this disc, including one for the feature itself. Production notes, talent files & more subtitles included than there are languages! Nice job on the extras though! Beggars can't be choosers so I'm grateful for the inclusion of the information they have provided!
Overall:
I've seen Murphy's Romance several times & have always greatly enjoyed the interaction between Garner & Field. I'll admit James Garner is one of my favorite actors. Partly because he resembles my dad to some degree & because he's a pretty darn good actor to boot! I missed his "Maverick" days but caught him fully as the one & only James Rockford or "Rockfish" as Isaac Hayes called him. That aside, Murphy's Romance is just a cute love story that everyone can enjoy! Great acting, great script, great film in total!
