Frowny.

20th Century-Fox's Cinema Archives line of hard-to-find library and cult titles has released Smiley, the Australian classic from 1956, executive produced by Sir Alexander Korda, written and directed by Anthony Kimmins, and starring Colin Petersen, Bruce Archer, John McCallum, Chips Rafferty, and Ralph Richardson. Unfortunately, as is distressingly common with Cinema Archive titles originally filmed (or projected) in widescreen, this release features a cropped, fullscreen transfer of its original anamorphic CinemaScope source material. Information on the web is sketchy about which Cinema Archives titles are botched. So, in an effort to help other fans like myself who want these movies presented correctly, and who don't want to waste their money on fatally compromised product...skip this completely unacceptable release of Smiley. There's no excuse for a fullscreen release of a widescreen movie in 2014...particularly from an exclusive, boutique releasing line that caters specifically to buyers who know the difference. Incorrect image ratio equals no review (too bad, too...the movie looks charming).
