The Show

"Blue's Clues" is one of the best shows currently airing which is aimed at younger children (roughly Pre-K to 2nd Grade). But, the fact that the show is aimed at pre-school children doesn't mean that it doesn't attempt to educate on several levels. The episodes included in the newly released DVD, "Shapes and Colors" really proves that point.

The episode topics on "Shapes and Colors" will be fairly obvious, but the shows go much further than the average children's show. In "Shape Searchers", Joe and the other characters are searching the house for various shapes. Joe must figure out where Blue wants to search for shapes next. Along the way, they encounter common shapes, such as squares and circles. But, they also find trapezoids and hexagons. I know adults who probably don't know what a trapezoid is. This is a great introduction for children to more complex geometric shapes.

This type of teaching is continued in "Colors Everywhere". Here, Joe and Blue are collecting pictures of all of their freinds, and they need orange to color Orange Kitten. So, they discuss how one goes about making orange from primary colors. But, they then go on to talk about more obscure colors such as violent and chartreuse. Then, Joe must discover which friend Blue wants to next add to their collection.

The DVD also two older shows as bonus episodes, which continue the "Shapes and Colors" theme. In "Adventures in Art", Blue wants to add something special to her painting and Steve must discover what it is. With the self-explanatory "What Does Blue Want to Make?", Steve has to figure out what Blue wants to contribute to crafts day. This show offers many good ideas for rainy day activities.

As usual, these episodes show that "Blue's Clues" is one of the most charming and engrossing shows around. However, they also prove that the show wants to teach more than basic ideas. The inclusion of (arguably) intricate geometric shapes and interesting colors will definitely help to stimulate young minds.

Video

The episodes presented on this DVD are shown in their original full-frame aspect ratio. The image is very sharp and clear, showing no grain or defects, and the colors are excellent. The transfer basically rivals digital broadcast quality, and save for limited distortion around some of the animated characters, the transfer is excellent.

Audio

The DVD contains a Dolby digital stereo audio track. This track provides clear dialogue and music, and shows no major defects. The clarity of the track is especially notable, as it sounds much better than your typical broadcast of the show.

Extras

Aside from a text parent's guide and some bonus previews, the only true extra on this disc is a 2-minute episode of "Oobi" from Nickelodeon's sister channel Noggin. Oobi is a human hand with eyes who hangs around with other hands. It's downright creepy is you ask me.

"Shapes and Colors" is another great "Blue's Clues" DVD release to add to your collection. Once again, don't let the simplistic title fool you, as the show will expose youngsters to ideas which they may not get on other shows.
