Roger Waters The Wall Blu-ray Review

Roger Waters - The Wall is a concert documentary film based upon the beloved classic rock album by Pink Floyd. Roger Waters (who was once the frontman of Pink Floyd and head songwriter for the band) has revisited the classic Pink Floyd album with a new concert tour and film. Roger Waters - The Wall was produced by Roger Waters.

Unlike many concert films, Roger Waters - The Wall is divided into two different aspects of filmmaking. The film is divided between being a concert film from his tour of The Wall and a documentary in which Roger Waters discusses his views and reflects on past experiences with war. As the film unfolds, Waters goes on a road trip and reflects on the loss he has felt from war.

The film is strongly anti-war and anti gun-violence. Waters is strongly opposed to war and to violence. Throughout Roger Waters - The Wall, Waters visits several grave sites of those whose lives were lost during war. Waters also discusses past war experiences with others throughout the film. Roger Water's is also dealing with the loss of his father.

The concert features performances of a number of songs from the Pink Floyd album and features collaborations from several musicians (who were not the other original members of Pink Floyd). The film features Roger Waters, Graham Broad, Joe Carin, Dave Kilminster, Snowy White, and Robbie Wyckoff.

There were many song performances, such as: "In the Flesh?", "Another Brick in the Wall", "The Happiest Days of Our Lives", "Mother", "Goodbye Blue Sky", "Empty Spaces", "Don't Leave Me Now", "Goodbye Cruel World",  "Is There Anybody Out There?", "Nobody Home", "Bring the Boys Back Home", "Comfortably Numb", "The Show Must Go On", "Outside the Wall" and more. The music of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters remains excellent and energetic. This is classic rock which holds up remarkably well.

The film is a bit uneven in quality in that the documentary aspect of Roger Water's journey seems a bit out of place mixed within the concert footage at times. It's almost as if the film should have been split into two separate portions: one for the concert and another for the reflections from Waters. The film is certainly a personal effort by Waters.

The legacy of the music is one which continues on. Directed by Roger Waters and Sean Evans, Roger Waters - The Wall is worth seeing for fans of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. The music featured is excellent. The concert builds to a finale with a falling wall of gigantic cardboard bricks falling down as the wall collapses and a giant encore with additional music. Fans of classic rock (and Pink Floyd in particular) should experience the concert documentary.

The Blu-ray:

Video:

Released on Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded presentation, Roger Waters - The Wall is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen and looks generally strong in high definition. The film has good depth, clarity, and color reproduction. The presentation is a good one overall despite some disappointing banding.

Audio:

The audio is presented in Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless audio. The sound quality on this release is remarkable (especially during the concert performances). The audio has strong clarity and bass reproduction. The lossless music sounds quite impressive on this release.

Extras:

A Visit to Frank Thompson (5 min.) features Roger Water's trip to the grave of a war hero from Bulgaria. Waters pays respects to him by reading excerpts from Thompson.

Comfortably Numb - Live at the 02 - With special appearance by David Gilmour (8 min.) is a performance with Waters and fellow Pink Floyd member Gilmour.

Outside the Wall - Live at the 02 - With special appearance by David Gilmour and Nick Mason (9 min.) features a reunion of three of the members of Pink Floyd.

Final Thoughts:

Roger Waters - The Wall is a concert documentary film featuring music from the classic Pink Floyd album and personal reflections from Waters. Fans of Pink Floyd will certainly want to check it out because of the music performances.

The Blu-ray release features generally strong PQ, superb AQ, and a Blu-ray exclusive bonus disc of supplemental features. The film itself is a bit inconsistent in quality but is worth checking out for fans.

Recommended.
