DARK HARBOR

Synopsis:

As David & Alexis Weinberg race through a torrential rainstorm to get the last ferry to their private island, they catch sight of an injured young man at the side of the road. The Mysterious stranger reluctantly accepts their help & by morning the incident is virtually forgotten, until a series of coincidences lead him back into their lives & into their home. Bizarre events begin to slowly unfold at their isolated retreat and what began as an act of kindness slowly gives way to a bizarre love triangle that ultimately forces the couple into a frightening spiral of sex & the ultimate in betrayal, where nothing and no one is what it seems.

Audio: There is a Dolby 5.1 audio platform employed for the film that provides more than is needed for this aural effects-less feature. The center is clean & quite clear while the surrounds & sub are put to very little use.

Video:

The video portion of the disc contains a full screen edition of the film. Not unlike most direct-to-video films. The picture had moments of clarity but it was weighed down by less than DVD quality imagery. The transfer/print is replete with scratches, markings & flecks. The film is totally watchable however, the quality of the images are not even close to the kind of digital transfer you would expect for a DVD. Its video quality is perhaps akin to a first generation VHS tape. On the whole, the image was rather disappointing. Artisan generally releases discs with pretty clean imagery namely, Stargate SE & Suicide Kings present the kind of quality Artisan has consistently presented. Given the amount of transfer errors and the general poor quality of the image on the whole, this is definitely one of their poorer efforts.

Extras:

The extras for this feature include a Director's commentary along with the trailer for the feature. I found the commentary very uninvolving and as predictable & slow moving as the film itself. Here's what I found to be the most disapointing aspect of the film. The trailer boasted all of the best scenes and was a far better production than the feature itself.

Overall:

Alan Rickman is one of the best actors around, IMHO. As such, I was drawn to the feature because of his involvement. Sadly, they can't all be pearls & this one proves that point all too well. I really wanted to enjoy the film but the elements that went to create the storyline where just way too predictable to enjoy. I don't believe that repeated viewings will hold up for this particular feature so I'd ahve to suggest a rental as opposed to a purchase.
