CHARLOTTE BRONTE'S: JANE EYRE Synopsis:
Set in the rolling hills of the English countryside, Jane Eyre tells the story of a Young girl who lives most of her life without knowing the wonders & joys of love. Either from a suitor or a relative. At an early age she is sent away to an awful boarding school that prides itself more in it's heretical dogma than it's care of it's students. While there a young girl who sadly dies at an early age befriends her. Having nowhere to go, Jane stays on well past her graduation & becomes a teacher, the likes her pupils have never seen. Soon schooling at the boarding school has reached its limitations & Jane longs for the freedom a governess's position will offer her. She is hired on as a governess for a wealthy landowner & it is here where she finds all the joys her life has never known. Jane Eyre is a story of love, lost & found that is as timeless as the love it demonstrates.
Audio:
The audio as presented in the disc is a Stereo presentation of unidentified origin. For the feature it is perfect. There didn't appear to be any moments when any other audio platform would do any better a job than what this stereo score did.
Video:
The imagery as presented in this feature is about as good as you might expect for a cable TV broadcast. There are times when the film is too dark & the colors are not there best. I have never seen an A&E disc before & as this is my first experience, I have been rendered non-plussed. Again, given the video quality for this movie, they would have been better off issuing it solely on VHS rather than using a transfer that is this poor. Additionally, it is a full frame version, which is not surprising for a made for TV film as this is.
Extras:
The only extra is a static history of Charlotte Bronte. Other than that there are no extras included on the disc.
Overall:
In the 1940's Orson Welles brought this story to life in what is the definitive version of this feature.1997's bow is remarkably well done & bears a great deal of resemblance to it's 50+ year old predecessor. This is an incredible movie that pulls on your heartstrings from start to finish. Well acted & scripted, A&E's Jane Eyre while suffering from technical flaws, hits every mark when it comes to the story. Easily recommended.
