Pallbearer, The

"Friends" star David Schwimmer stars along with Gwyneth Paltrow in this little Miramax romantic comedy/drama that didn't get much notice when it was released in 1996. The story revolves around a case of mistaken identity when the mother of a Man recently passed away calls who she thinks is the childhood best friend(Schwimmer), who turns out to be the wrong guy. Soon he finds himself reading a speech at the funeral of a man who he doesn't even remember. The childhood girl of his dreams is also back in town(Paltrow), and the two try to strike up a romance amidst the confusion.
Although the plot is a little too odd, the performances are generally pleasing and the script contains its share of funny, cute dialogue. I also enjoyed how the movie was structured and the sort of subtle nature to its plot and pace. It's definitely an enjoyable little film and its unfortunate that there is nothing extra on this DVD.
The DVD VIDEO: In terms of Disney catalog titles, this actually is pleasantly suprising in terms of picture quality. Colors are clean looking and pure throughout, looking nicely saturated and showing no signs of color bleeding. Images are not terribly sharp, but are adequate in the sharpness department and remain consistently clear throughout, especially in the exterior scenes. Detail is fair to good throughout. Flesh tones are accurate and natural as well.
Nothing in the way of problems with the print or pixelization/aliasing. Overall, if this image was a little sharper, it would be great. One wishes that Disney would put in the effort on every picture that Tristar puts into each and every one of their releases. Again though, compared to most of the catalog DVD Disney/Miramax titles that have come out in the past(Bullets Over Broadway, Dangerous Minds), this is actually an acceptable transfer.
SOUND: "The Pallbearer" is a small romantic comedy and the material is almost completely dialogue. There's some nice pop tunes along with a little bit of a classical score. There's really not much more than that, but what is here sounds clear and has no problems. Dialogue is consistently clear and never thin.
MENUS:Basic Disney film-themed menus.
EXTRAS:Nothing.
