THE MOVIE

Clint Eastwood stars as "Skip Tracer" Tommy Nowak in Pink Cadillac, a guy who tracks down fugitives who have jumped bail. Bernadette Peters co-stars as Lou Ann McGuinn, a woman whose husband is wrapped up with a neo-Nazi group who has obtained a large stash of counterfeit money. The problem is that when the cops move in to bust the group, only Lou Ann is around…so she's the one that gets arrested. After posting bail, Lou Ann takes off with her hubby's pink Cadillac and the counterfeit dough, and Eastwood's character is called in to track her down.

Pink Cadillac is remembered as one of Eastwood's more recent flops at the box office (the movie came out in 1989, one year after Eastwood's semi-successful final Dirty Harry movie, The Dead Pool). While both Eastwood and Peters are very watchable in their moments together, the movie can't seem to make up its mind as to whether it wants to be a drama or a comedy. We get more drama…but the film's premise is so odd, you wish they would have focused more on the humor.

The bad guys are also a problem, in that the audience knows they aren't going to pose much of a challenge for Eastwood. If you're going to pit bad guys up against Clint, they need to be as cunning as he is…but here we get a group of brain dead, gun shooting idiots that spend most of their time spouting out their racist beliefs. As an audience, we aren't worried that the villains are going to one-up our hero…we just hope our hero will hurry up and put them away so we don't have to spend any more of our viewing time watching them.

Pink Cadillac isn't quite as bad as I remember it…but it's far from good. The best parts here are watching (a surprisingly sexy) Peters flirt with crusty ol' Eastwood, and to see those "Classic Clint" reactions that he has become famous for – the glint in his eye, the snarl on his face, and an occasional good one-liner.

THE DVD

Video:
As noted above, Pink Cadillac was released in 1989, so I was a little shocked at how bad the transfer here is. The movie is presented in 1.85:1 anamoprhic widescreen, but there is so much dirt and grain on the print, the source material used for this transfer must have been in pretty bad shape.

Audio:
The audio is better than the video, although it's nothing spectacular. It's a 5.1 Dolby track, and the both the dialogue and soundtrack music come through nice and clear. While the soundtrack overall isn't above average, it does become a bit aggressive during shootouts or gun play in the movie.

Extras:
Like all DVD releases in the "Clint Eastwood Collection", this title includes the original Theatrical Trailer for the movie, plus a Cast List that includes a Clint Eastwood filmography. Other than a Chapter Selection and a Subtitle option, these are the only bonuses on the disc.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Save your time and your money. With so many other good Clint Eastwood movies available on DVD, only those who want each and every one of Clint's films will want to take a ride in this Pink Cadillac.
