The Film:
A husband and wife's life is challenged when a plumber comes and sweeps the wife off of her feet. Sounds like the typical storyline for a romantic comedy until you thrown in the fact that the plumber is a woman named Marijo.

Marijo comes to unclog Loli's sink and they hit it off. Loli realizes that Marijo gives her a sense of freedom that she doesn't get from her husband - Laurent (Alain Chabat) – who is a womanizing, misogynist, bigot who very clearly is getting what he deserves.

Laurent grits his teeth a lot, Loli flirts and flits around juggling the two like circus balls and Marijo sticks around trusting that Loli will ultimately choose her. Instead they become a married trio – of sorts – under one roof with each fighting the other for affection and attention.

French Twist is directed by Josiane Balasko (who plays Marijo) who seems to be copying the absurdist style of one of France's best comedy directors; Bertrand Blier – who directed Balasko in Two Beautiful for You. But while there are a smattering of laughs the film is often annoying and not as funny as it should be.

What's more it is difficult to associate with the characters each of who act on a whim and are never truly developed. In time the film tells us that we cannot only become tolerant of others but we can come to accept them as our own. It's a great message but the execution is not very accomplished.

Video:
The DVD is presented in widescreen 1.85:1 and looks very good. Just like most comedies the colors of the film are sharp and the image is clean. There is no edge enhancement and the only compression artifact is noticeable in some of the out-of-focus background details.

Audio:
The film is presented in Dolby Digital mono. There is not much music in the film and most of the film has dialogue all of which sounds fine.

Extras:
The only extra is a trailer.

Overall:
French Twist is a passable romantic comedy that speaks to the larger issue of homosexuality and tolerance. The film tries to use broad, absurdist comedy but often comes across as somewhat nasty and the character development is undercooked. The DVD itself looks and sounds very good.
